Unhappy Violent cat

Hi

Can you please help me, my poor Mum has had to have her cat put to sleep she is deverstated she loves her cats sooo much but one of them has been becoming very violent even to the point of biting my Mum and Dad plus the other cats.

They live outside of the UK and could not re home the cat as most roam about living in dumpsters which Mum did not want to happen.

I am gutted for her it was her favorite cat and she would never had made the decision but it was taken out of her hands.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation or can help me to help out my Mum.

Thanks so much

Re: Violent cat

Hi V, not sure where to start really hun, sometimes it's understanding the problem and then being better equipped as to how to deal with it and make it better, sometimes it just is the way it isI am so sorry that your mum felt she had no choice but to pts this poor lad,i don't suppose it matters much now since he has passed

Re: Violent cat

I'm so sorry your Mum is feeling so awful. It's impossible to know what made him behave like this, but it's possible that there was something badly wrong with him affecting his behaviour if it was so out of character for him.

Re: Violent cat

No one can made your mum put to sleep her cat, I think that this is just an excuse. And if you try to help, we need more information for the cat.
Did he start to attack suddenly? What provokes him? Do he need some sort of treatment - sometimes cats become aggressive when they feel sick.
I live outside UK and there are no official rehome units but there are many people looking for stray cats and understanding cats. So ask your mum to try harder to help her cat.

Re: Violent cat

Not sure I understand from your post whether you mean the cat that has been violent was put to sleep or one of the other cats has been violent since the other cat was put to sleep?

If one of the remaining cats is violent and has been since the other one was put to sleep it could perhaps be grieving or as already suggested it may be ill (perhaps have an abscess or similar and just doesn't want to be touched as it is in pain).

If the violent cat was the one put to sleep did anyone manage to examine it to see if there was an underlying cause - could it have been knocked over perhaps and again if it was in pain it definitely would have been aggressive to anyone trying to pick it up or whatever.

Re: Violent cat

I hope your mum took the cat to the vet first and it had a complete check over to see if it was in pain somewhere before it was put to sleep.Poor cat I sorry but this makes me soooo mad :mad that a cat was put to sleep because it bit someone and other cats. There is always a reason for a cat doing it you just have to spend time to find out what it is and normally you can solve it. If on the other hand there is a valid medical reason and the vet says that there isn't much they can do then that is the only time to have a cat put to sleep.
If I had my cats that I have owned over the years and cats that I have fostered put to sleep every time one bit me then there would be alot of them dead and buried rather then them being in great loving homes now.

of course the cat was checked over my Mum loved that cat like her own child, the vet said she was dangerous and that it was inevitable.

Re: Violent cat

We have 3 cats at home, the youngest is a year and a half and is pretty aggressive. Mainly towards my Mum. He was fine as a kittent but has got quite wild. He growls if you try to take food off him - like when he pinches the other cats food. He will jump up at my Mum and latch on with his claws. He likes cuddles, but you never know when he may decide he has had enough and attack you.

He isnt too bad with the other cats, they tolerate him.

Mum is just worried as he attacks her most days now, and she has bad legs and any scratching on them makes her bleed an awful lot. So she is unsure if she can cope with him anymore.

Nightmare really!

Re: Violent cat

First of all you need to get your mum to get her cat checked and if he can't find anything medically wrong that would be coursing him to do this then ask to be referred to a pet behaviourist and make sure its one that deals with cats more on a day to day basis. There are many things you can do to help him stop biting a clawing your mum and I could go into some but I really think it would be best if your mum saw a behaviourist as they will come to your mums house and see the environment the cat is living in and what he does everyday and be able to put a plan together to help him stop. It won't be a quick fix and will take time to re solve this problem and it will probaly be quite costly to but it will be worth it in the end. The other thing your mum could do to get some tips is read the vicky halls books.Good luck. If at the end of the day your mum still doesn't like his behaviour and can't cope then make sure she finds a rescue that will be prepared to put the work in.
Above all there is always a reason for a cat to act this way e.g because its in pain, because its un happy about something, because people thought it was funny when kitten bounced when they wiggled there toes and fingers and laughed teaching kitten it was perfectly aright to do so when kitten got older they do the same and of course kitten gets much bigger with sharper teeth,The cat is scared of something,Wants attention and has learned this is the best way to get it etc etc so before anyone thinks of putting there cat to sleep always think of this before you do so.
