Hello, New Here And Need Advice!
Hi everyone, im denny from hampshire, i have a little problem with our cat and wonder if anyone can give me some advice.
I lost my last cat to cancer 2 years ago after having her for 14yrs, it broke my heart and still miss her so much now but thought the time was right to get another one as i miss the company of a cat. So at the weekend me and my partner got 2 cats, or should i say 1 cat and 1 kitten, they are both mother and son, mum is just over a year old and son is coming up for 10 wks. they have settled in really well, the boy kitten is an adorable ginger ninga! right little mischeif maker lol, mum is i think a BSH mackrel colour. The problem is mum., she will not stop crying and mewing, no matter how much attention we give her, she just crys most of the time, i dont know if she is searching for her other kittens ( she had 5) or pining for her old owner, i just dont know, when she does cry she lays down on the floor and rubs her chin all over the carpet, and sort of crawls along the floor? weird? i have never known a cat like it, she is eating like a horse, using the litter tray fine and drinking, playing with toys etc but this crying and mewing is bafferling me. i have already fallen in love with her she's so soft and loving but is this a cause for concern? i have caught kitten still suckling from her and she seems to like it but he is also eating wet food. Any ideas? |

Re: Hello, New Here And Need Advice!
SHe's in heat! She needs neutering and then this behaviour will stop - otherwise it will happen for a week every 3 weeks and could cause her health problems.
As for the kitten still suckling that's fine - it will gradually ease off.

Re: Hello, New Here And Need Advice!
hi, we plan on getting her spayed as soon as possible, we dont want any more kittens, the 2 we have now are enough! she wont go out anyway and we wont let her out until she's been done.
The girl we got her from was only a young girl in her early 20's so i dont think she really had the money to get her done. and wasn't kept in the best conditions really, a tiny 1 bed flat, we have a large 3 bed house and these cats have the pleasure of running around like loons, and they love the stairs, more so the kitten, he is so adorable but a little bugger! lol We have named the kitten Fizzgig and mum is called Hoggle!...we are film geeks in this house so are named after film characters Thanks for your replys, this site is very good for advice. xx |

Re: Hello, New Here And Need Advice!
Yes, definitely in heat. My girl, Tia, went into heat just 3 weeks after arriving, and two days after the arrival of a male kitten. If I hadn't been able to tell from her calling and sensuous writhings, the sight of a 14 week old kitten trying to mate with her made it crystal clear, lol.. While she was on heat, although she's only ever been an indoor cat, she did her level best to break out.
She sprayed as well, which I wasn't expecting, it didn't smell as bad as male spray, but it spray all the same. So you might want to watch out for that. Luckily, I'd bought a pack of incontinence pads for use inside their carrier during trips to the vets so I just placed a few of these round the areas she was marking which were all routes to outside, or places she could smell the outside like drain outlets. Much as I love her, one time in heat is enough for me. Earplugs were essential. She's booked in to get spayed next week now her jabs have been completed. |

Re: Hello, New Here And Need Advice!
Hi the only thing im worried about is if she is pregnant again...i dont know if the girl we got them from let her out after she had the kittens, she is eating all the time, and i have put that down to the fact that kitty is still suckling from her? she is still calling alot, and always licking her erm..bits? lol...as soon as im paid im booking her in to get spayed i just hope that she isn't, i will be very annoyed with the girl we got them off if she is, we would never get rid of them, i have cats until they go to kitty heaven but i would of thought she would of told us if she had been out.

Re: Hello, New Here And Need Advice!
If she is pregnant again it would be very, very bad for her to be so again so soon after this litter. I would personally just ignore the possibility and get her spayed anyway. Being pregnant and feeding kittens is incredibly draining for a mum - another litter could kill her or the kittens might all die. Having said that it is UNLIKELY that she is pregnant - if she's still calling now sound like she started with you so won't have had male contact. They do tend to clam down once mated. Get her spayed asap, if you wait till the end of the month she may be in heat again - 1 week on, 2 weeks off - and that makes the operation more risky and sometimes they charge more for it.
