Hello all.

We have a 4yr old male cat, although he is fully neutered he still acts as a full tom cat (the vet can't really explain in - humps and everything). Any way he is a very domninant cat, always getting into small scraps. About a week ago he started waking us up about 4am by standing athe fron door screaming at us o let him out. Now he is an indoor/outdoor cat, but we rent and can't put a cat flap in. Until now he sleeps with us during the night, dawn till around tea time he is out then he has a safe box to wait for us to come home from work.

We are at our wits end, not sleeping is really hard! We have tried ignoring him, which is easier during waking hours (7-10pm) tried squirtng him with water every time he screams from the door and on the vets suggestion negative reinforcement with noises (a tin with some pebbles in it, shaken when he starts to scream) It works for 10 min then he starts again. He got used to the water so now he's not bothered by it. We have also tried to put him in the spare room until he calms down but im up 20+ times a night. He is not a playful cat anyway, but sitting up and playing with him isn't an option at 4am.

Even outside he just roam around screaming all day, i havent seen him relax properly in over a week, he is very twitchy and on edge. The vet has suggested some medication to sedate him but it seems extreme! I just dont know what to do to gehim to calm down, he's gne off ood as he is just screaming all the time! The vet says medically he is fine and it is a behavioral issue, any one with any ideas?? I would love you forever!

Is there a window you could leave open for him to come and go? Have you checked with your landlord about a cat flap - some don't mind.
Other than that I suggest a Feliway hormonal plug-in to help calm him. If he has only just started behaving like this it sounds as if something has upset him. Perhaps there's a new cat in the area causing him trouble

whoops sorry i thought my post had been deleted so double-posted!

We had asked and the landlord has said no, and we were recently burgled so dont want to leave anything open!

Will the feliway things work? i thought they were just for spraying and territory issues?

feliway works for all sorts of issues so it's worth trying.
