Re: Geriatric
My OH Mums cat Dora acted really odd when she got to about 15/16, her behaviour changed and she would start sleeping in the greenhouse and hiding in strange places, the vet reckoned it was a form of dementia, but that as long as she was eating and drinking to leave her to it.
She died when she was 18 when she got cancer.

Re: Geriatric
My friend has a rescue cat called Ollie who is like that too, probably dementia. He's around 17, and spends time staring into space and sleeping in the bath!

Re: Geriatric
Waterlily - I'd still like to rule out a medical problem as well given her age-some conditions can mimic dementia, l so I'd pop her along to the vets for a full bloodtest, even if symptoms subside. I'd also have her blood pressure checked as a priority.

Re: Geriatric
she had her bloods done last year and had the body of a young cat they said, but I guess at this age it can change quick, I will be taking her for a check up, she is working herself up into stress over nothing so I had thought it could be more then just dementia type. Is blood pressure a symptom of this ?

Re: Geriatric
Socks became disorientated in her final years - I restricted her access to rooms - as she would forget where the toilet was- In her latter 12mths she was confined to just one room at night and living room in the day and 1 room rest of the time - she managed fine but spent most of her time asleep anyway

Re: Geriatric
Ours were OK through old age but a family friend's cat used to forget how to the cat flap when she reached old age.

Re: Geriatric
How sudden is this change in behaviour?
If it is dementia, it would happen very occasionally at first, but get worse with time. Also, the weirdness of the behaviour would probably increase.... If she is suddenly wanting to hide, I'd say she feels ill. A cat who feels really poorly tends to sneak away into some hidey hole till he is better....... or dead. Better have the vet have a look at the old lady, I think.
