I think high blood pressure can be associated with a few illnesses Hyperthyroidism being one of them, which could show some of the signs your old lady has been displaying.Hope she is okay and it is just "old age" but best to let the vet check her.

If it is dementia, it would happen very occasionally at first, but get worse with time. Also, the weirdness of the behaviour would probably increase....

If she is suddenly wanting to hide, I'd say she feels ill.
A cat who feels really poorly tends to sneak away into some hidey hole till he is better....... or dead.
Better have the vet have a look at the old lady, I think.
Its only just started the last week or so, no more then that, she's always asleep somewhere happily, never like this. She has been funny with the litter trays, she will cry at the door when the other has always been open for years, she seems to not be bothered or cant remember how to get to them, so this has been an interesting thread to see others experiences.
She isnt hiding, just restless more. But now I'm worried. She is going to the vet first thing monday, but what should I look for if she needs an emergency vet before then ?

Re: Geriatric

If she doesn't look really ill, I wouldn't rush to an emergency vet.
But it is rather sudden for dementia, I would say

Yes, with oldies things can change within the space of a few months so best to get her checked out. Behaviour changes can be a symptom. I would just have the BP taken firstly ( sometimes you need to take a few readings for an accurate reading so sometimes vets admit them for a few hours ) and then test for hyperthyroidism and possible renal disease which are the most likely associated diseases, though it can occur on it's own. Keep any eye out for any changes in her eyes as well.

Good luck with visit.

Re: Geriatric

There is also the possibility of a minor brain haemohrrage, possibly in the frontal lobe. It could explain the illogical impulses and restlessness.....

Re: Geriatric

Old age.....
Don't panic, Steffie had an unexplained episode of odd behaviour when she was 16, and she went back to fairly near-normal and lived another 2½ years.

Re: Geriatric

My elderly cat went through several of these sudden dips in her latter years - it just became the new norm - even after her final dip she was still ok and could have carried on a bit longer with medical help - so unless its severe I wouldn't rush - it might just be your cats new "norm" too

Oh ps - I found placing a hot water bottle under the bed helped ease her aching joints at night and helped my cat to settle to sleep
