Strange Habits

Do any of your cats have strange habits that make you scratch your head and wonder to yourself, why are they doing that..? Well if you do your not alone. Our beloved kitties do seem to have these strange habits and they do seem rather puzzling at times. Now, to someone who understands cat behavior more then i do may have a logical solution to why they act this way, but to me it gets rather bizarre.

So let's begin with our older cat Dolly, she's about 3 years old and seems to have this strange fetish towards cardboard boxes. No matter how big or small they are she just loves to go crazy on these boxes with her claws. As confusing as this habit may seem to me, i guess it's better then going nuts on the furniture lol. So with that said, does anybody have any idea why she does this and why she's so in love with cardboard boxes..? My guess is maybe it's the equivalent to a good scratch post, but my guess is as good as any.

Now, if you think that's weird our younger cat Lila has a very strange habit of her own that is, well let's say unique. First off Lila is about 2 to 2.5 years old and is not the biological sister cat to her older sister Dolly. But to us that makes no difference and why should it. Anyhow, Lila's habit is what i consider confusing. Her habit is that she likes to claw the carpet. Now, i don't mean like stretch on the carpet i mean claw it. She will walk into the living room and get into this pose, like she's planning on attacking the carpet, then she pretty much does just that and begins using her front claws to pull up on the carpet. Funny thing is if i yell her name out loud she stops immediately then rolls over onto her side and lays there a short while then will presume on pulling herself across the room with her front claws. I don't really get this behavior and maybe i don't even wanna know. Whatever it is she's doing is a little disturbing. Then again she's not hurting or damaging anything except pulling up fibbers in the carpet. Now with that said, does anybody have any clue why she'd be doing this..?

Why my beloved cats do the things that they do may seem confusing to me, but to them it's probably perfectly normal. So if anyone has any insight as to why they do the things they do I'd love to hear them. As for now, i guess all i can do is class my kitties as unique.

Re: Strange Habits

Cardboard boxes, I've never known a cat not to be fascinated by them and most other members, if not all, will say the same. For some reason a empty box is the greatest plaything ever to a cat.

Clawing carpets, #3 cat Max and to a lesser extent #1 cat, Bola, both do it and it drives me up the wall as they have 2 perfectly good scratchposts on the cat-tree. To be fair to Max, he's recently started using the scratchposts, but only if I'm around, when I'm not he tears into the hall, stair and landing carpet like he's digging to Australia.

Re: Strange Habits

The way you describe Lila clawing the carpet is the way my cats react if there is something that smells good to them on the carpet like catnip or certain foods. Both my older cats will also roll around and pull themselves along the kitchen floor when I have cleaned it and it is still wet. I use bleach in the water and it seems to drive them wild!

Re: Strange Habits

Both of mine have odd habits..

One of them loves licking our bed, its one of those with a fabricy type base and she is obsessed with licking it! Drives me completely mad because its really loud, especially at some silly time in the morning. She also likes to almost stick her head in the toilet and walk around on it when its been flushed..good thing really as we have just started the first stage of litter kwitter

The other cat loves to roll around in the bath when you are in the bathroom which is really cute to watch but a bit bizarre why she does it.

Re: Strange Habits

Our Basil LOVES cardboard boxes - he makes it into his fort/mission control then chews his way around the edges.

Another funny habit he has - if he's finished eating and there's still food left, he'll paw the floor all around the edge of his bowl then walk away. I know it's because in the wild cats cover any leftover food to hide it from others, but still funny to see nonetheless as he's not covering his food with anything!!

Re: Strange Habits

Mine all love carboard boxes, to hide in, sleep in, and then destroy. There are far worse play things. You could use it to your advantage, and hide toys in a box etc.

As for the carpet, it sounds like that is stretching/marking taken to an extreme. This can start the endorphins flowing (happy juices) and then get that almost catnip effect.

As for strange, my one cat is happiest washing my hair (or one of the dogs, visitors, other cats.....), she even cleans one of the dogs ears for her.

The positions cats lie in facinates me.....how can they be comfy?
