Introducing our new persian to our DSH
Hi, I am in need of some reassurance and help, please.
We rehomed Kitty, a beautiful grey DSH from the RSPCA about 6 months ago, she is 4 years old. Kitty has only just settled in now and we wanted to rehome another cat to keep her company, and because we love cats.
Over the weekend, we went to view a persian who is three years old. We have now rehomed her from a breeder who didn't have enough room to keep her. The breeder said to us that she is a bit nervous of humans.
Now as far as introductions go, I introduced the smell to Kitty the night before we got her, she seemed interested in sniffing but didn't seem to intimidated. When we brought Mimi the persian home, she was meowing quite a bit and we put the basket on the floor so Kitty knew what we were bringing into our house. Kitty seemed scared and ran off. After a minute or two we put Mimi into our bedroom with food, water and her litter tray, and now she is just hiding, though she has eaten and used her tray. We managed to put her on our bed a couple of times for a good old brush, and this morning I put her on the bed for a stroke and she began purring.
Kitty has hissed at our hands a couple of times, but seems to go between loving attention and playing as normal, and then when she smells Mimi on us she doesn't like it and gets a bit put out.
Are we doing everything right at the moment? Please can you let me know what you think/any suggestions?
My other concerns are this: Mimi hasn't had any jabs or been wormed, so I need to take her to the vet and get her sorted this week. Kitty is up to date with all of hers so health wise is it ok for Mimi to be in the house with my other cat if she hasn't had her jabs done?
Also, being a persian, I'm fully aware that I need to clean their eyes and brush them to encourage a nice coat [her fur doesn't look amazing at the moment, I think she lived in an outdoor cat hut so is a bit smelly. I've been using a tiny bit of olive oil when brushing for the moment to help sort her coat out]. My concern is that she breaths a bit noisily and makes a grunting kind of noise when she eats, she also sneezed a couple of times but I dont know if this is because she was stressed out with the move. Is it normal for persians to be more noisy or is there a possibility that she has a cold... or worse, flu?
I am beginning to really panic that we have made the right decision in rehoming another cat, a persian. It would totally break my heart if she carries the flu and can't mix with other cats... and I am feeling a bit upset that I have put my other cat into misery by introducing another cat.
I just need to know that I am doing things right so far, and would just like reassurance or advice on the decision that I have made.
Thanks a lot
