introducing cats

hi im new to this forum!

i recently got a new kitten (Franki) after my other cat (Lynx) was hit by a car , hes settled into the house just fine & loves everybody including my 6 week old daughter

yesterday my husband took on a new cat, a 12 month old (or so the owner says) female, her previous owner couldnt look after her after work commitments. We are her 3rd owners unfortunately. When he brought her home all she did all day was hide under the couch, wouldnt come out for food, water or even toilet. We left her to it just to let her settle in. We got her out and tried to introduce her to the other animals (the kitten & dog) and she wanted none of it. At Bedtime we brought the 2 cats upstairs and tried to get them to know each other, we sat with the both in the bathroom and let them have a wonder around. They were having none of it and just hissed at eachother, my poor kitten was petrified that much that he literally pooed himself. So we just picked him up and took him to bed.

Is there a way that these to will ever get on? i dont want her to go & end up with yet another new owner as shes really sweet when she comes to you

This might be of some use to you. Integrating Kittens with Cats
Basically you need to take introductions slowly. That's what I'm doing with my new kitten at the moment. It takes a while before the hissing dies down but with plenty of scent swapping and small introductions you'll get there. They may not be best friends but they should hopefully tolerate each other.

Good luck, I know how you feel as I wish my two would get on straight away, but it takes time. I'm so impatient lol

Re: introducing cats

Everything I've read about introducing new cats says that you need to take it slowly - have a blanket for one of the cats then let the other cats smell it so that they get used to the smell. It's not always that easy to keep them apart though which I found when I brought my youngest cat home. She was very young and we have an adult cat who was about a year old at the time and didn't feel comfortable just keeping the kitten in a room by herself. It took a while for our older cat to get used to her but they are best friends now.

Keep at it, don't force them to interact and before you know it they'll all be best of friends!
