Just bought a new rug but my cats are scratching it to death. They have scratching posts which they use as well. Are they doing it because it is new or just fancy acquiring a rather plush new rug for their plaything?

maybe try a deterrant like what you would use when deterring from urinating. if you use a spray make sure that it doesnt take the colour out of the rug.
also try spraying the cats with water when you see them doing it?

If you do see them doing it, pick them up and take them to their scratching post and place their paws on it - then lots of praise and perhaps a treat when they do. Worked with mine!

My suggestion would be to get some fresh cat-nip from a spice store or health shop as its always a lot fresher than the stuff in most pet shops and rub some of the cat-nip into their scratch post which will encourage them to use the post first...good luck.........Chris
