Does this sound normal for a kitten?

I just adopted a kitten from the SPCA today. She is a 3 month old black cat who I have named Meya. I had friends over soon after and she was very friendly as my friends played with her. I can tell she's going to be a very friendly cat.

So later on in the night when I left my bedroom (which is where she will be sleeping) I noticed that she meowed non stop until I returned to my room. I left again to see what would happen and sure enough she continued to meow until a returned! Is this normal for a kitten? For them to be meowing so much?

One time when I returned to my room I noticed she had urinated on my bed. I didn't know what to do so I picked her up and put her in the litter box. she walked out and I put her in again. this happened 3 times. Right before I gave up she pooped in the litter box. what I don't understand is why she would pee out of the litter box and then the next minute poo in it?

Anyway just thought I would share my curiosity!

Re: Does this sound normal for a kitten?

She is probably saying:

I am just a little kitty and I am so scared and lonely in this strange new place, don't leave me alone, I want my mommy, I want someone to pamper me and make me feel safe and comfy......

Apparently she is quite used to people, as she reacts very favourably to your friends. She felt quite happy with these new litter mates. And then, all at once, she was all alone again, feeling very small and very confused.....

Peeing on the bed may be mixing her scent with yours, marking your territory as hers, marking YOU as hers.
But it may also be pure stress......

Give the little mite some time, give her lots of attention, and when you need to leave her alone, give her a bed with some worn clothing of yours, or a plush toy with your scent on it. It will serve as a surrogate mother...

This is my kitten Gaudi on his first day, he cried all the time, too, and felt very safe with me. So I gave him my pyjamas and my plush cat to sleep with.

Kittens love to sleep with teddies if they're on their own, Treacle had one, but has now wrestled it to tatters!!

Re: Does this sound normal for a kitten?

Every one of mine did this when they went to their new homes, and although I'd given new owners the usual advice about keeping them in one room until they'd settled, both boys were so unhappy that I just told them to open up the safe room and let the kitten have the run of the house, only closing them in there if there were any problems such as inappropriate toiletting. How old is this little one? She's probably feeling very tiny, very lonely and very afraid and is craving some attention. Just spend as much time with her as possible.

Re: Does this sound normal for a kitten?

Thanks Jiskefet, I'll try out making a bed with some of my clothes the next time I leave her. Her safe area is my bedroom, which I am in almost all of the time now. That's a nice photo of your cat by the way

I guess her peeing was just territorial, she has not done it again and seems to be very calm most of the time.

Is it normal for kittens not to eat for the first day or so? Or to only eat small amounts. It seems like she has no appetite at all!

Here's a photo of her, she's only 3 months old.

Re: Does this sound normal for a kitten?

Treacle didn't eat for the first day either, the vet seemed to think it was normal. He soon picked up!

It really does help to have 2 kittens rather than 1, even if they're not littermates, they are just so much happier and more focused on each other rather than following the owners around and getting into mischief!

Re: Does this sound normal for a kitten?

My kitten cries to when we first put her to bed but she settles. When I get up in the morning tho as soon as she hears me walking around she mieows and when i go in she rubs around my legs and wants lots of fuss.
She found a small teddy in my daughters room and she has that now but think I might put her bigger teddy in there that my son gave her.
She is developing such a character and the longer We have her the more I can tell what she wants. Guess we all get to know our own pets like with children in a way.
Good luck anyway x x

Re: Does this sound normal for a kitten?

a big soft Doberman X helps my Jeffrey to cope with his mum out of the way. His real mother is usually on my bed. Bruno often has to give up his big bed so Jeffrey can sprawl out on it and the dog has to curl up on a cat cushion. Your kitten is beautiful.
