I adore my kitten Frankie but....

At night time he drives me mad...He is extremly active in the morning and tends to wake around 6, get out of his bed and come and lie on my bed for a cuddle, he then spends ages purring , having a stroke, then he goes off for a snoop around the bedroom. He then spend about 3 hours playing and exploring, sleeps for a couple of hours ect ect, but even if he's asleep on his bed downstairs as soon as we go up to bed he is wide awake and climbing on top of the wardrobe or up the curtains ( I spray water on him when he climbs the blinds downstairs and he hates it, he's stopped climbing them but they are full of holes ) !!!!!! Or generally attacking us under the quilt, In the end I shut him out and I hear him tearing up and down the stairs until he either lays on the landing or cries and scratches to come in, then I let him in and he usually gets on his bed and then sleeps.
We are close, as he loves mummy cuddles, and although he goes to all family members, it is me he goes to more, and he is my kitten, so I assume he doesn't want to be seperated from me at night time , but does anyone have any suggestion as to how I can get a calmer nights sleep...or is that just a kittens way? lol He is 20 weeks old
Also he is off for his second lot of jabs in two weeks and the vet has suggested I make him in appointment in the new year to have him castrated, will that calm him down? Also what age is it advisable to let him out of the house, I have a lead which I take him in the garden with , but not very often. I wanted him to be a house cat but he is at the door every time it opens and sometimes he cries at the window so I am not sure what to do
Thanks (Sorry it's such a long post lol)

Re: I adore my kitten Frankie but....

I would say almost categorically, that all kittens behave in this way. Cats are naturally active at night time and early morning. Have a good play with him before bed time and then don't interact with him again until you're ready to in the morning. All my cats have had the night time crazies, and all of them have grown out of it. They soon learn that when the lights go out and mum's in bed, that's the time to be quiet too. You have to decide whether you're going to let him into the bedroom with you or not. At the moment I think he's a bit confused as to where he's allowed to be and not. They are amazing at adapting to our sleep patterns, though, so don't despair!

Try giving him a bit of food before you go to bed as well. My kitten gets a few biscuits before bed and she settles down quickly.

Re: I adore my kitten Frankie but....

As Misi says - cats are naturally active at these times so its par for the course really. He will calm down as he ages. All kittens in our house are kept out of the bedrooms for this very reason. I need my sleep and a rough tongue rasping you awake at an ungodly hour is not a good thing. I would establish a routine of play and food and then being left in a safe room downstairs (if you have one) for the night. He may complain for a few days but he will get used to it.

Mini is 7 months now & still a complete terrorist at night! We haven't had an unbroken night's sleep since we got her lol but it's so hard to be cross, as soon as she has finished her zoomies she cuddls up between us under the quilt with her tiny head poking out & purr purr purr purrs ALL night VERY loudly!!

Re: I adore my kitten Frankie but....

Treacle has never slept in the bedroom, because there were far too many places a tiny kitten could get stuck! So he sleeps in the living room and seems to enjoy it with all his toys around him

He's 4 and a half months and has his crazy half hours but then settles and has a sleep xx
