Biting & Scratching Unprovoked

My 10 week old kitten is very playful (obviously) and gets very excited playing with his toys etc. However lately he has been attacking me and other family members for absolutely no reason for example i could be sound asleep completely still and next thing i know he has his claw stick in nose, or is pouncing on my face and getting his claws stuck in. Other times he attacks my hands and continually bites them so hard it gets to the point where it pierces my skin my hands are very scratched and sore. If i try to move them away from him he does it even more. Is there anything i can so to stop this kind of behaviour or is it just part of their growing up?

Re: Biting & Scratching Unprovoked

Everytime he does it (when youre awake obviously) try blowing gently in his face then ignoring him.

Not sure what to do when youre asleep, unless you shut him out of the bedroom.

Re: Biting & Scratching Unprovoked

It sounds as though he is getting over excited and over stimulated.

It would be a good idea if he was left to himself at night, shut in your kitchen or sitting room with his litter tray, water bowl, and a snack.. He will learn to relax fully during that period, as he will get to know that during the night there are no humans around for him to interact with. Then he will be calmer in the mornings when you get up.

Distract him with a toy when he starts an attack, so he learns that toys are for playing rough with, human hands are for strokes and cuddles. A wand type with a dangly thing on the end is a good one for you to continue playing with him, but will divert his teeth and claws away from your body parts!

I would clip his claws as well, if you aren't already doing so - it makes a vast difference.

Yes he has teasers and distraction is definitely working. He has been better over the last few days, more chilled out. He has a vets appointment on saturday for his first lot of vaccinations and i have already asked if they can clip his claws as the poor thing keeps getting stuck on everything. Thanks for your thoughts, much appreciated

I do the blowing in face when Amber gets a little bitty. This morning she was just about to run off with my toothbrush, as i was about to pick it up and put it somewhere else, she decided to bite me, so i blew in her face and she sat there with her two front paws over her face

I was so funny.
