Young kitten, behaviour, play etc

Hi, I've never had a young kitten before so when unpick Thomas up in a week he will be my first. This wil sound like a silly question inthink but here it goes...
What are the do's and don'ts when playing with a small kitten from the off?
I have been told not to encourage and hand stalking, or finger catching which sounds obvious but I am sure I've seen other people having their fingers stalked by kittens. Surely this could lead to problems, especially as I have a toddler.
I want to make sure from the off he learns what is acceptable and what is not.
If he starts to scratch where I don't want is it enough to say "ah ah" and move him to the scratch post? Any other tips?

Interactive toys like da Bird are much better than hand stalking which as you say can lead to problems. unwanted behaviour should be re-directed by removing Thomas from whatever he is doing and giving him something else to occupy him - the scratch post, a toy or even throwing a scrunched up bit of paper for him to chase.
Decide whether or not you want him sleeping in your room too - a kitten pouncing on your head or feet at 5am isn't my idea of fun but a lot of people don't mind

Thanks for the tips.
From day one i am afraid he will be sleeping in the kitchen. When he's older he may be allowed one of the sitting rooms too but I don't want him upstairs as don't want him going in my sons room overnight. I need to have some fluff free zones ha ha

Re: Young kitten, behaviour, play etc

Hi - I've just adopted two 5 month old kittens last weekend, am a total kitty novice so can only tell you about the experience I've had! Basil settled right in and Sybil hid for a few days but is now starting to come out of her shell

Basil meeows a lot if he's excluded from a room and does not like to be alone at night as he's in unfamiliar surroundings and I think misses his litter mates, every kitty is different though as far as I can tell from these two! I think the younger you get them, the more company they need, particularly at night
