Closing the cat flap permanently

Hello!

I'm new to this site. I have had 2 six year old moggy cats from birth who up until today have had the luxury of a cat flap into our home. So they have come and gone as they please.

They have always been prolific killers, bringing home mice usually, rats, birds etc, usually dead, sometimes alive and sometimes inbetween! There are phases to their killings and we are finally slowing down from 4 dead mice/guts a day to 1-2. We usually find a present or two first thing in the morning but then get left gifts at any time in the day.

Since my eldest son was born 3 years ago I've been concerned about the safety /health /inconvenience of this but it's only been today when i've finally decided to make some changes on my vet's advice.

My second son is 14 months and is into everything. I just can't risk it anymore (last week he picked up a mouse's lung before that was left causing me to call nhs direct!).

So, I've locked the cat flap, put their litter tray back out and will see what happens:

Has anyone got any advice or experience in changing/controlling their cat's environment in this way? I feel quite guilty.

So far it's worked ok today but I'm concerned about them driving me out of bed tonight... Or shall I put them out at night too? They could certainly fend for themselves!

Many thanks for reading.

Rachael
