Using a litter tray, or not as the case may be

Hi everyone,

My wife and I have had a kitten since about the end of April, she was about 7 weeks old when we got her and so she is almost 9 months old now. She has two litter trays, both of which are completely cleaned every 7 -10 days as well as the affected area being removed each time she does her business.

One tray is against the back door (it needs to be moved to open the door), the other is to the side of the front door. She uses both, the one at the back door more than the one at the front. However she has recently taken to weeing on the carpet in front of the front door instead of the tray next to the door.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deter her from weeing on the carpet here? I've tried applying windowlene to the carpet (she hates the smell!) and putting down tinfoil in the affected area; none of which have worked. I've tried telling her off each time she wee's here (immediately afterwards) and rewarding her each time uses her trays, but it still doesn't make a difference. Once every day or two she still uses the carpet. Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Maybe the tray needs cleaning a little more often - cats have sensitvie noses and she might not like the smell before it begins to affect you. Just a thought (not a critisism)

You will need to use simple solution, available from petshops,to completly remove the smell, alternativly you can use a solution of biological washing powder. Also telling off a cat wont work.

Re: Using a litter tray, or not as the case may be

Hi,

Thanks for the responses.

Yes, she is spayed.

Is the simple solution you describe for use to clean the tray or the areas of the carpet?

Telling off the cat is working in lots of areas. For example, she is always biting and scratching toes and ankles; I have continually and rigidly told her off each time she has done this to me and now she never does it, she just strokes her head against my feet every day - she still does it to everyone else though! Also, if she attempts to do something she shouldn't, such as eating something she shouldn't, I tell her 'No' firmly and with authority and she leaves it and trots off immediately. It is just this area of not using the litter tray that is the problem.

How much more often does the tray need cleaning? As stated above, the affected area is removed as soon as she does anything in her tray plus the whole litter is replaced every 7 - 10 days. Does it need replacing less than every 7 days? How often do other people change the litter?

Thanks again.

To quote the pets at home website:

Lightweight Non-Clumping Wood Pellet Cat Litter by Pets at Home.

Cheers.

The non clumping woodpellets are fab - I use them but with a non clumping litter I don't think you can get away with only completely cleaning it out once every 7 - 10 days sorry. Even with a clumping litter that may be too long for your cat - some are very fussy?

With the wood pellets I personally would use a bit less litter in the tray and do a full clean much more often say every couple of days..... you won't get loads of wastage that way?

Thanks for that,

I'll give that a go. Would you recommend clearing the 'used' litter as well each time she uses the tray (3-4 per day)?

And also, what would you say should be the minimum depth of litter in the tray.

Thanks.

Re: Using a litter tray, or not as the case may be

Hiya

Not quite the same as I have four cats who insist on using one tray despite others dotted around

I clean my out completely every day because of this and do it in the evening and then scoop any used in the morning before I leave for work and then change again in the evening.

I would still scoop used out morning and evening and change every couple of days. With the pellets I use four scoops of litter to a normal sized covered tray - I have one of the big plastic scoops from PAH - makes it a couple of inches deep? With only one cat though you may well not need quite so much. Have a bit of a trial and error time and see how she goes?

Hope that helps
