Is it worth the stress??

I posted on Cat Chat the other day about my attempts to get my two ex-rescue cats into the carrier to the vets for their jabs. Well I managed ok with Oskar the other day, and I bought the recommended carrier which is much better, however I have just had a nightmare taking Max in. He went crazy in the surgery, jumped off the table and all over the room hissing, then up onto the counter and down the side of a cupboard, quite dangerous as it was where a sliding door would go if someone opened it. They had to use some kind of trap to get him out, having sent me to the waiting room, and i could hear all kinds of bangs and miaows and hisses as they got him back in the box. So I had to leave him there and they will try again this afternoon, and I'll pick him up later.

But the vet also said I have to bring him back in 3 weeks- is it worth the stress on the poor thing? Surely being so scared must be almost as bad for him as getting whatever diseases he'd get from not having the jabs at all?!

(Just so everyone knows, he is absolutely fine with me, and not nervous in general when it's just me in the house- he was on my lap the whole of last night- but as they were ex-stray cats they hate new people and situations. And yes, I have used Feliway....)

Re: Is it worth the stress??

May be worth investing how much it is for the vet to visit you at home?

Is it just for the second vaccine shot? How handy are you with a syringe? Would the vet draw up for you and let you give it at home?

Re: Is it worth the stress??

Hmm, I don't know... I could ask but I've never used one....

I have now got him home again, apparently he calmed down a lot and it was all fine... he is now asleep in the corner. The carrier stinks, think he sprayed everywhere which he hasn't done before.

It's only the Leukemia jab that needs the follow-up, maybe I should have left that one out... not sure I'll manage that again so soon. I think the thing is that he even hates having flea treatment put on, so he would probably run and hide even if I did it myself or got the vet to come over.

Maybe after a few more trips he'll get used to it.. doubt it somehow though!

Why not just ring up the vets and ask the receptionist the cost of a home visit - it may be less than you think.
