Aggressive new cat - advice please

we have got 4 cats who are now getting on in age

some months ago a stray cat started to come around and we fed him outside (we live out in the middle of nowhere so it wasnt a neighbours cat etc)

we decided to take this stray cat on and caught him, had him neutered etc

he is a wonderful cat, loving, friendly, chatty, a real character except he is nasty to the other 4 cats. He chases them all the time and fights with them, he is lying in wait for them and if they are outside he will stalk them

the 4 other cats have now taken refuge upstairs and will not come down, we have had to put a litter tray up there and feed them up there too - they all hide and if they hear him they all run away, they seem to be continually on edge and it is really sad to see

the 4 cats lives has now been turned upside down because of the new cat - we had hoped that he would settle down but he hasn't, we tried feliway and I didn't see any change in him at all, we chase him down the stairs to try to get him to know that it is not his place to go up there and stalk the others but he still does it

he basically rules the roost, he has no fear and will go for the other cats whenever he can, they are living in fear and I don't think their quality of life is good at all, they seem constantly on edge

I have never given up on a cat, never got rid of a cat either but we are all at our wits end with the new cat - the other thing is, he is everything I have ever wanted in a cat, a big boy cat who is loving, gives kisses and goes for a walk with us and the dog but I cant have the other cats being so scared all the time

has anyone got any advice on what the hell I can do, other than finding him a new home I really don't know what would/could work to chill him out a bit

thanks

yes, we have tried that and it did nothing that I could see, we used it for a month and put it at the bottom of the stairs where he lies in wait for the others most of his day
