New owner of catflap - advice please

Just had my PetPorte catflap installed - it works off the microchip in the cat's neck.

Just need advice as to how to introduce it. What I have done so far is tape the flap up so that there is an open hole. One cat seems fine with this but the other is nervous. He will hop through if tempted with treats but he will do ANYTHING for treats.

At some point I am going to have to let the flap down - any tips, advice very welcome.

I had to do the treats thing when we first got one, but he soon got the hang of it. Try closing the flap and standing on the other side with the treat. There's only one way to get it!!!

Keep going with the treats, through one way and then back the other with the flap open a few times and then close it and do the same. They should both get the idea eventually.

yeah your cats will get it eventually, if one gets it the other will follow eventually.

Our first cat didn't like the cat flap and didn't use it very often until we got our second cat and she saw her using it. i think it's a confidence thing, once they see someone else using it ok they get more confident. does take a few weeks sometimes tho. just be very encouraging

Re: New owner of catflap - advice please

Thanks for advice.

Update is that flap is down now and both are using it. Our semi feral isn't though which surprises me somewhat - think she may get the idea soon.

The nervous male was the first to get the hang of the flap which flabbergasted me as I would have bet good money on him taking ages - but treats did the trick!

The female is still a little suspicious. We have it locked during night hours and I saw her giving it a paw bashing around 6 am in the hope it would open.

Re: New owner of catflap - advice please

I have 3 cats. 1 is 9 years old, one is 7 and Archie is 4. I never had a cat flap until last year. Archie worked it out immediately and never has a problem with it (even with his missing leg). The other two only use it when there is no other option (like we're at work)

I wonder if its due to habit. The older cats are probably used to me letting them in and out.
