Advice needed for keeping a cat indoors

The time has come when once again I call on your expertise PetForums!

Our little guy Trotsky has a very sensitive tummy and we are aware that he requires a mostly grain free diet, but we have recently had a few other issues that started appearing when he got big enough to climb over the walls in the yard.

Basically he has become very ill on three occasions since he has been exploring beyond our yard, the vet suspects that he is eating various things that are causing him to become ill. The vet has advised that it is in the little mans best interests that we keep him indoors as an indoor cat from now on due to the severity of his illness on each occasion.

So what kind of things do we need to do to ensure that he is stimulated and becomes accustomed to indoor life?

Could we use a harness to give him access limited to the yard?

We currently have a small forest of cat trees, 4 to be exact, 2 of them are ceiling high. There are loads of bookshelves and hidey holes that they both use throughout the day.

We have scheduled play time, although to be honest they prefer to play with each other nowadays and get bored of dangly toys and lasers within just a few minutes.

It's pretty heartbreaking to see him meowing at the door, so we're giving consideration to cat proofing the yard so that he can't go beyond, does anyone have any experience of this?

Re: Advice needed for keeping a cat indoors

Hi there,

Our cats spend most of their time indoors and they both absolutely love their laser toy! You can get one from any pet shop and it provides our cats with hours of amusement and is fantastic exercise for them. You can even do it from the comfort of your sofa! Ours will chase it along the hall, up the stairs and back again until they're shattered!

Definitely worth a try!
