Kittens behaviour change after holiday

Hi,

We've just come back from 5 nights away from our 5.5 month old kittens. Rather than put them in a cattery we had various family members popping in to feed and play with them over the course of the weekend. Feedback was that they were fine.

When we came back we thought Hunter looked a bit skinny. They went crazy when we walked through the door and Hunter jumped on to the worksurface, which they know not to do and haven't done for months. Hermione was purring like she was underwater - completely different purr to the one she had last week!

It turns out my sisters gave them quite a few dreamies - we tend to only give them treats every so often (no more than 1 or 2 a day).

Since we have been home (Monday night), they have been acting strange - not too interested in their food. Then today, Hunter pooed on the carpet in the hall and Hermione wet herself on the carpet in the lounge. We've been having a couple of problems with her wetting herself, so have got a Vet appointment in 30 mins for both of them.

They didn't clean themselves for ages, Hunter actually sat down on the carpet and rubbed his bum on it about 4 hours after his accident. We ended up washing him with wet cotton wool when I got home from work as he smelt to high heaven!!

Are they sulking about the lack of treats? Could it be they are unwell? Any one else experienced behaviour changes after going away?

Any advice would be great. Currently Hermione is sat looking sorry for herself on her cat bed, when usually she would come and find us if my OH and I and Hunter were elsewhere in the house.

Sorry for the essay!

Re: Kittens behaviour change after holiday

I'm not sure what's in these particular treats, but if their diet has been largely made up of them over the past few days, then I'm sure it hasn't done the world of good for their constitutions. The pooing might well be sign of sulking or showing displeasure too...

Although I smoke, I never do so indoors or anywhere near the boys. However, about a year or so ago, when I thought they were both out and about, I thought I would get away with having a small cigar indoors (with all the windows open). Napoleon came in half way through, looked me straight in the eye, arched his back and took a dump on the floor right in front of me! That was me told, and I never did it again...

Re: Kittens behaviour change after holiday

Hi,

We took them both to the vets, both seemed ok but Hermione had a slight temperature and was a bit lethargic. Nothing else obviously wrong with them, but have been given some stool pots to get samples of Hunter's if it looks consistently runny as he has never been 100% perfect in the number 2 department! Also, some Zylkene to try with Hermione just in case she is a bit stressed.

They seem back to their normal selves, are still off their wet food a little, but are eating the dry. They wolf down the tuna Natures Menu, but are no longer keen on the Chicken and Turkey or Chicken and Beef.

I reckon its boredom due to the fact that the Applaws dry is 80% chicken, so they probably want some fish variety?

Anyhow - the catnip toys have started to take effect and they went berserk last night - definitely no lethargy.

I guess every kitten/cat has off days just like humans!
