Training Tricks!

Has anyone else trained their cat to do tricks?

I was thinking about it for a while as I am a dog trainer/behaviourist and have tried training cats previously, but none were quite as patient and of sound mind like my current boy, Luke.

So, just over a week ago I started training him! I was amazed at how quickly he picked it up!

Within 3 minutes he was sitting on command for treats. Since then we have established both Sit and Touch as well-known comands and he does these happily and with ease upon my command (Touch is just him gently touching my hand with his paw for a treat). Then two days ago, I tried Turn - so just asking him to turn in a circle on command. Took him 2 mins on the first day, then yesterday I asked for it and he was happily doing it.

I am really amazed by him, although I have initiated the training and an rewarding him, it is really all him and his intelligence. He is easier to train than a lot of dogs I have come accross.

Really proud of him and wondered if anyone else had experienced this? Will do video when I have done a few more things with him and put on youtube.

Also, any ideas for what else I could train him to do?

Re: Training Tricks!

Pets at home do these tiny little bits called Duck Bites and another one called, Deli Chicken I think? But they are small and dont take long to chew but he seems to love them so I use those.

He has now completely mastered Touch and will do it up to 4 times in a row for treats, Sit, Turn and he has started learning Up, which means he jumps onto what ever i am pointing at... he seems to have grasped this quickly too. In between tricks, while he is eating his treat, I sometimes walk to the other side of the room then shout "Lukey Come!" and reward him for coming, so he is learning this too. He seems to really enjoy it, I think mainly because he just loves doing anything with me or my other half and spending time with us.

I would like to teach lay down, but after that I am not sure what else to do!

Re: Training Tricks!

I have two as well, i have to seperate them to do training. Just shut one away for 10 mins and work with the other then vice versa.

I tried some 'sit' with Solo Simple Cat the other day.... that was fun... he did actually get it, but every time i put the food down he leaps up and grabs my hand. He also found it more fun to just run in circles so I gave up in the end...

Re: Training Tricks!

I have found he seems to need a constant reminder of what Turn involves, but hes picked up everything else on command. Not sure where I am going wrong on the Turn, its very different to training dogs
