Fireworks

As Halloween is coming up, I thought I'd ask what you do to ensure your cats are happy and safe.

I am going to keep Shadow in one room (the bedroom) and play music so she can't hear the fireworks so clearly.

She can get stressed quite easily as she is a nervous cat, so I am a bit worried about her to be honest. There will be a couple of hyper kids in the house downstairs, fireworks going off on the green across the road, and the doorbell ringing constantly from trick or treaters. Hopefully the music will muffle a lot of it. But the thing is we have to go out that night to a party and I just hope she will be ok on her own. We won't be there to fuss over her and give her cuddles/reassurance.

Does anyone know if there are any natural calming remedies available in pet shops or chemists which are not harmful to cats that can calm them down and make them sleepy? I've heard of people doing this to dogs to calm them down on Halloween / Bonfire night (drugs prescribed from vet). I wouldn't want to get any drugs especially though for obvious reasons, I just don't agree with taking medication if you don't have to... so if there's anything natural I can give her then Id love to hear about it. Or anything I can do to make her happier?

Re: Fireworks

No matter what the pet is, if you allow it to roam you are putting it at risk...

Re: Fireworks

Feliway... I'll have to google that! Is it available in most pet shops? I'm from Ireland and I see you're from the UK so hopefully I can find some! Thanks for the advice!

Exclamation Re: Fireworks

I looked on the internet today for some Feliway myself to get in ready for bonfire night (also my nephew is sleeping over next week, which might stress my kitty out a bit ). The cheapest I found was at VioVet

Re: Fireworks

I thought it would be quicker and more convenient to order from my vet, it's costing me 19.50 euros, which is ok really when I need it fast (you see we're in a transition period of moving from rented accommodation to our first very own property and have moved in with my boyfriend's parents for a couple months). I think it's the stress of all this which brought on her bouts of cystitis seeing as not only is she in a different environment but my boyfriend's nieces and nephew who are quite young are over every weekend and she HATES kids (hehe, like me!!) so even though we keep her away from them I think it's still quite stressful. Anyway, I think this will really help until the 5th November which is when we finally move into our brand new house which will be nice and quiet and roomy for her. We don't have bonfire night in Ireland (that's a UK thing!), and fireworks are illegal, but people always find ways of getting hold of them for Halloween. So I needed them quite urgently really.... hope it works!!!!!!!!!!!! gonna give her some catnip too, play some music and keep her in the bedroom with some nice yummy treats... I'm sure she will be fine!
