I tried to train the cats to stay off the kitchen counters and table. I tried various methods but it proved useless. They would stay off when I was directly there but when I turned my back or got up in the middle of the night, Ava or Sunday would be there. They don't even try to hide it now. Has anyone been successful as this?

Use a water spray every time they get up - and when you are not there - not much you can do other than keep them out the kitchen.

I think you can buy something called Sticky Paws as well and they dont like the feel of it - i think Fluffypurrs told me about it so if she sees this post im sure she will tell you where to get it from

don't give them anything on the counters to make it interesting. they will get bored with it eventually. and btw telling them off when they do it could actually be making the situation worse as it's getting your attention. they may be doing it just for that reason if there isn't anything on the counters that they might want. you can get some of these for some pets they work. for my clever ocicat however it did not. she worked out when the spray came out after the beep and ducked! yes ducked and then moved back on the counter out of the sight of the sensor. but she's not your average cat lol doggie solutions

My cats never seem to jump up on the counters now, when they were younger we would squirt them with water and shout at them to get down when they jumped up on the side or the dining room table.

When we were out we would cover the surfaces in pepper, which they did not like.

I only catch mine up there occaisionally now - usually if I've left something tasty up there and he hasn't been fed which happens in the mornings when I'm trying to get my 15 year old off to school.
I just used to put the cat on the floor and say no very firmly and never used the kitchen counter to put his food dish on. He eats in the consveratory and I always fill his bowl on the windowsill in there.
