Another pee problem

I have a burmese cat 9 years old, male neuter who I have just adopted a couple of weeks ago. He uses his litter tray fine (although he explores outside he comes in to use the toilet.) He seems to have settled really well and seems very happy.

One thing though - he pees in my bed but no where else. Edit: to make this clear -no where else= no other 'wrong' places in the flat; he's happy to use his litter tray the rest of the time. (I am single). He loves being in bed with me and snuggles up under the covers purring etc so it is a happy place. But he pees on top of the sheet under the covers at some point. I'm not sure if this is when I am asleep or at another point during the day but not when I am looking and I only discovered it for the first time on Monday. When I put clean bed linen on I sprayed feliway all over the mattress and sheets. I also fed him there too. This worked for one night but I've found it's happened today too.

I guess I could lock him out of the bedroom but I don't think he'd be very happy with that. Is there another solution you can think of?

Thanks

Re: Another pee problem

Sounds like hes marking his scent over yours to me, you could try a litter tray in the bedroom

Re: Another pee problem

He may be marking his territory and, as cruel as it sounds, you need to break the habit by not allowing him access to the area in which he is spraying.

There are quite a few useful threads on here about this sort of thing so I am sure you can get some good advice.

Re: Another pee problem

It seems to be a common issue, weeing on beds. Someone said once its to do with the fact that that's the place where your most concentrated smell is, and he is trying to mark the area as his Not sure if that's true or not. It maybe a behavioural issue or a medical one.

I would definitely keep him out of the bedroom for a while untill you can get to the bottom of it, or protect your bed with a picnic blanket or something with a waterproof backing.

I would have him checked by a vet just to make sure he doesn't have a low grade urinary infection. They associate painfull peeing with their litter tray and look for somewhere soft. Stress can be a trigger for that and he may not have any other discernable symptoms so its best to check.

Other than that you could try Cat Attract cat litter. It has an ingredient in it that makes cats want to wee there. Maybe adding another litter tray of a different type ie hooded or open in a different more private place.

If it is a behavioural issue its going to be a bit of a guessing game, trying to read his mind.

Re: Another pee problem

Thanks all. I'll have a look through some more threads too. One thing I know is that it isn't a health problem. I adopted him because he was spraying in another house!! But this was a totally different problem there. It was because he was in a house with a load of other pets that he was scared of. However he was thoroughly checked out for physical health problems.

I would say the bed is his favourite place really - at least with me in it anyway so I'm thinking he must be keen to mark this particular territory. He does use his litter tray all the rest of the time.

I shall think about keeping him out/ or putting a litter tray in the bedroom and also search through some more threads.

Re: Another pee problem

I had a general google and think I might have stumbled across the answer from advice from an animal behaviourist on this site

Pets' Corner : Advice: Dogs

I think in this particular case I probably need to heed this advice

so I need to keep him shut out of my bedroom. I've only had him two weeks but she was also recommending this for a kitten some people had had for only a few days. I guess I need to grit my teeth and lock him out the room and wait for the howling. I'm glad the flat above me is empty at the moment!!

Re: Another pee problem

It may seem cruel but it really is a case of training him into the kind of behaviour that you want. One of our neutered moggies used to spray in our conservatory but he hasn't done it for ages so fingers crossed that has sorted itself out!

Hope you get it sorted
