Our 3 cats all use the litter tray different.

The tabby (Hemroid) uses it OK

The little black one (Mogwai) has got the theory right, the theory says "Dig hole, do business, cover hole back in" and that is what she does... She digs a hole (infront of her), does her business (at the back of her), and them fills the hole in (in front of her)... and then I have to cover her business up

The big black one (Bell) is the problem... He will not use the cat litter
He does it BY the litter box, but never IN it.
He will not do it anywhere else in the house, just BY the litter tray... BUT NEVER IN IT

It could be for various reasons.
- He might not want to share litterboxes, so you might have to get an additional one
- He might not like the litter type used
- He might not like where it is positioned, as they like to be in a safe place with an easy escape route
- If it is hooded he might not like the hood and vice versa
- He might associate the litter tray with pain, e.g. he might have had bad constipation which might have made it painful for him to go, or he might even have just banged his leg and it hurt for him to squat. If it is a hooded one, try taking the hood off and vice versa, otherwise you may have to buy a new one, as we are going to have to do!
Sooty hurt himself on the flap of the hooded toilet, so he kept going on the floor next to the tray, we took the hood off and he was perfectly happy, however the litter is going absolutely everywhere as he is the type to go a lot of scraping about.

They are in the open so they will not feel trapped

We have 2 litter trays, none have hoods... Do you think I should try one with a hood

yes.. use a hood.. many cats like privecy when doing their buisness

i would also reccommend getting another litter tray.. as said.. it might not like sharing... we have 3 trays with hoods for 4 cats.
1 upstairs..
1 downstairs
and 1 out in the cat pen.

The recommendation is 1 tray per cat and a spare ,so I would suggest you try at least one more tray to see if that helps.It may also help to use a different litter in the new one.If you already use a clumping try a non clumping or vice versa.
