Is She In Heat?

My female kitten Luna is 5 months old now, and due to be spayed in Feb or March (when I have the available funds!). I am wondering if she is currently showing signs of being in heat? Having never owned a cat before, I'm not sure!

She's usually much more aloof than our male, who is a big softie and loves attention. Recently though she's been having these mad moments where she'll come over and start being aggressively affectionate - getting right up into your face and rubbing herself frantically against everything! Is this a sign of being in heat, or is it simply kittie hi-jinks?

Thanks!

Firstly I assume your male is neutered.I've never lived with an unneutered female with a male in the house so I dont have anything to compare with.I believe females calling can be less obvious "to humans" when a male is present. What you describe does not sound overly like an in season cat but as I say she has a male in the area so could be.Females on call are generally obvious.Rolling on the floor yelling, lying flat to the floor with their rear end raised and paddling with their hind legs, and it is constant to the point it near drives you insane.Sorry I cant help any more.but to be on the safe side keep her safe ,if she is calling she will look for an escape route looking for a mate, and at such a young age that would be a disaster as she is far to young to ever give birth.

Re: Is She In Heat?

Thanks for the reply, after reading that, I don't think she is in heat, as she doesn't display any of the other behaviour you've described or that I've read about on the net. She must just decide "right, I want attention, now!" and goes for it! I don't really mind, it's just annoying when you;re trying to watch TV or eat your dinner!

My male isn't neutered yet. He will be next month when my vet will take him. He's not showed any amorous signs either yet, so there's no problems there.

Re: Is She In Heat?

Oh I hear the feint jingle of alarm bells, un-neutered female and male in the same house is a recipe for disaster, especially given the females age

Don't rely only on certain behaviour traits, as already mentioned if she is surrounded by an intact male you prob won't experience the full on effect of a call. I really hope you are not unlucky enough to get caught out, it does happen. I'm sure I remember reading on here of an experienced breeder who got caught out by a male she thought was too young and landed up with a litter of kittens which she had to DNA test to establish parentage. Stranger things have happened and it's really not worth the risk, your girl is far too young to have a litter.

It might be worth getting in touch with the CLP they offer vouchers towards the cost of neutering, failing that try finding a vet who will allow you pay the bill off monthly.

Wishing you all the best

Re: Is She In Heat?

As above really With an unneutered male in the house you could be headed for a huge problem.I would ,if you cant afford to have both neutered ,take the female now and get her done first to be on the safe side, because if she has been in season and mated she could very well become pregnant and she really cant handle pregnancy at her age it could be very dangerous, not to mention expensive with vet bills due to complications. How old is your male?
