Help! Cats scrathing up the place!

Hello,

I have 2 cats but they keep scratching the legs of our kitchen chairs even though we have at least 2 scratching posts in our house!

They do use the scratching posts, but for some reason just get lazy and use the chair legs whenever it suits them.

Can I train them not to scratch the chair legs??

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Steve.

Hi and welcome to PF

Enya does this its annoying, i'm sure someone will be along who knows but did a search and found this.good luck

Easiest of all is a product called Sticky Paws sometimes found in some mail order catalogues like Scotts of Snow. Check with Don't declaw - get Sticky Paws - Control cat scratching behavior - Index: Stickypaws.com. Or buy double sided carpet tape from a DIY or carpet store. This is what I use on furniture and it works. Much cheaper but not as nice looking a sticky paws.
There’s a product, Feliway, available from vets that mimics the scent mark made by cats when they rub their chin against something. Where they chin rub, they rarely scratch. ‘Feliway may help to stop cats scratching the furniture. Use a single squirt on the affected area each day.’ says Professor Daniel Mills, professor of behavioural medicine at Lincoln University, which runs an animal behaviour clinic. ‘But they need somewhere else to scratch.’ You will need to use Feliway every day for 21 days sprayed on to all unwanted scratch sites. A reader tells me that this works.

Re: Help! Cats scrathing up the place!

Hi GeordieBabe,

Thanks for the tips!

Can't believe I never thought of using double sided carpet tape - that should work great (I know they don't like sticky things as they have freakled out about sticky tape before!).

I will definitely give that a go, thanks

That Feliway sounds effective, but won't my cats get freaked out if they smell another cat scent that is not their own?

Thanks.

Hi, welcome to the forum

My cat has a habit of scratching our chairs too.
The double-sided tape worked perfectly for us, I recommend you try it.
Although we got this product instead of actual tape:
