so my kitten drinks out of the toilet...

says it all really she doesnt like drinking out of the bowl or even from the tap like all my previous cats has but i keep catching her down the toilet. i try to always put the seat down to stop it but you know what men are like....the hub keeps forgetting so i make sure i give it a clean every day so its not too filthy but this cant be good can it? i mean its a toilet. does anyone elses cat do this? aslo she keeps stealing my other cats food wich is fine except she throws it up right after as she eats so damn fast! even when they have the same food she needs to have his!bless him he lets her and just sits waiting till she is done to have his.but i dont think shes trying to be dominant i think its more she was a rescue cat and is used to having to fight in for her food? i think ive manged to get her to slow down eating so she doesnt throw up but any tips on getting her to stop pinching my other cats food would be great as she is greedy and eats most of it before he will go in for his.
i also have a problem with cat litter my boy has always been very fussy with his cat litter and spends forever covering his poos up it gets annoying after 10 mins but im used to it now, however i think the kitten must be copying him (she does spy on him while he goes much to his distaste!) and thats all fine and well except she is much messier and cat litter gets flung out all over the house! does anyone have any tips to calm this down a bit or any products that actually work to stop it getting trailed about so much? thanks in advance

Re: so my kitten drinks out of the toilet...

Hi - just a quick thought about drinking from the loo - have you tried a water fountain? It might help...

Do you have more then one water bowl? Cats can be funny about using things that other cats have used. Generally it's always best to have a few sources of water dotted about the place for them to choose from.

In regards to the food stealing, it may help to feed your cats separately. for example you can feed the kitten in a different room or feed the other cats up on the kitchen side.

dunno our cat doesn't drink from the tap either (but is FASCINATED with the loo and flushing), yet loves the fountain. We have a cat-It one, which just bubbles rather than a proper fountain.

i have a few bowls of water dotted about and have tried feeding them in different rooms but my older cat wont eat unless she is in the same room and just lets her eat his till she is done i think he feels he needs to make sure she is eating or something...

it will be the cat it one i get as i have 3 other cat it things so far and they go down a treat not sure if i will get the scratch post one looks just like a bit of cardboard to me...but i think i will get the rest the food maze looks wicked! i think she is just a bit of a weirdo with her infactuation with the washing up sponge, sleeping under the pillows and all.....i love it about her of course i just dont think the toilet drinking if very healthy! she comes running as soon as anyone goes into the bathroom too so i think her habit may be to do with the noise it makes when someones gone for a wee i will have a try making tinkle noises while she drinks out of the water bowl and see how she reacts XD

Re: so my kitten drinks out of the toilet...

if you clean your loo the chemicals stay in the loo for about 24flushes........and your kitten drinks from it??

put the loo seat DOWN and get a water bowl and or water fountain, never ever left them drink from the loo.

Re: so my kitten drinks out of the toilet...

Mia in my avatar is obsessed with water, particularly the toilet. She will drink out of it so we keep the lids shut all the time... but occasionally we forget and find her sipping! I am in two minds as to which would be worse for her, some germs which will probably be destroyed in her tummy (since she is a healthy cat), or residual bleach left in the toilet. To be honest her toilet obsession has worse consequences when she sneaks silently up on hubby having a wee and suddenly her head just appears between his legs. She has been peed on more than once...
She happily drinks out of a normal bowl though, and also our bedside glasses of water!! (They complain if we use a tall thin glass & they can't get to the water...)

Re the food thing. Ours were rescues from a house with a few cats and they had particular food behaviour - particularly mum Lila would wait for her daughter Mia to have her fill before eating (even though we use 2 food bowls). Once they learned that there was always going to be enough food for both of them they started eating together. Probably took a few months to do this though, so it is a behaviour that will probably be unlearned as she realises there's plenty of food now.

Re: so my kitten drinks out of the toilet...

Arthur went through a bathroom fascination phase, including me finding him standing in the toilet bowl. I guess it is part of them exploring their surroundings.

My mother in law's cat once drank from a loo that had just been bleached - he'd never shown any interest in the bathroom and one day decided it would be good to try. Nearly killed him, he was chucking his guts up and ended up at the vets practically on his death bed. He's still alive but they always shut the loo seat now and are very particular when guests come round just in case.

Shut the lid, then shut the door too - even what seems like 'clean' toilet water is not going to be healthy.

i always try to put the lid down but we sometimes forget more so at night when we stumble out asleep to use the loo but we are getting better remebering! she does like to sneak up behind my hubby and stick her head between his legs but as of yet it to be weed upon it was me she first followed and got her interest in the toilet so i pre warned my hub and he shuts the door behind him,of course she is a cat and that wont stop her she manages to sneak in sometimes....
as for cleaning the toilet i figured chemicals would be worse but youvr never smelt the things my hubby does in there! but i dont use harsh chemicals or any bleach my house doesnt get dirty to really need it in my view.i use ye olde methods like lemon juice and white vinigar ect bonus is i dont have worrys of that cats getting into the bleach and drinking it...
