Cat weeing outside cat loo

Hi all,

In November last year, we brought home Petal, an 8 yr old rescue cat. She was house trained and mainly an indoors cat.

Frustratingly, she poos at the back of her cat loo but wees out the flap at front!! I dont understand it. I go through 2 puppy training mats a day because I have to put them underneath the cat loo. She just goes in the loo, doesnt turn round, just wees in corner but most of it leaks out of loo onto training mat.

Its costing me a fortune. Can anyone help? Once a month she wees inside the loo....its really puzzling me. She doesnt go out much but she doesnt seem to do her business outside.

Any advice appreciated thank you.

Re: Cat weeing outside cat loo

Maybe try two trays as some cats don't like to wee and poop in the same tray.

Re: Cat weeing outside cat loo

My old girl does this, she gets into the tray but because her back legs are a bit stiff now she doesn't squat squirts most of the wee goes outside the tray. I saw her once and she got as far as getting her front legs in the tray and didn't bother going in any further and wee'd outside! In her case she's just old (nearly 18) and I think it's just the way she's going and as long as she at least attempts to go in the right place I am quite thankful.

To keep your costs down just put newspaper (if you get one) under the tray, far cheaper, or if you don't get a paper I am sure a neighbour would give your their old ones. Unless you have the litter tray on a carpeted area that is, in which case it may be worth getting a bit of plywood to put it on or a plastic tray to save your carpets. Have your tried putting a litter tray outside somewhere a bit sheltered for her as she may be ok going outside as long as its in a tray close to the house.

The idea of having two trays is a very good one though and I hope it works.

Re: Cat weeing outside cat loo

Hi tnank you. Loo is on plastic mat, a bit of old carpet and a waterproof mat plus training pad because newspaper did not hold the wee and my carpet kept getting stained.

Two trays did not work. Im going to try to get her to use her loo outside in quiet place. Im going to put it outside and put her out a few times each day/night.

Thank you x

Re: Cat weeing outside cat loo

has she been checked by the vet for a UTI???? That would be my first post of call. Any and all litter tray probs are often the cats way of communicating to us that they have a UT problem.

To stop her standing in the tray and peeing outide it, get a "top opening" tray instead of one with the entry on the front or sides. It doesn't even have to be a proper litter tray as such, just a good plastic storage box with the right size/height sides (lid removed obviously). Make sure thought that height is a) high enough that they can't pee over the side but b) not so high that have problems getting in or out.

With cats that miss the litter tray at times... a good big litter tray (or plastic storage box) often solves the problem. Many litter trays simply are way too small for many cats.
