Cat possibly got some mummy issues...

Hello all, I joined these forums to get some advice on my cat. He is a strange cat, loving, but defiantly odd sometimes. I got him when he was 4 months old, was looking for a rescue cat and this women needed to home him as soon as possible. He wasn't separated from his mother too young but the reason the women wanted to rehome him was that ever since he was born (rest of litter rehomed) a cat she had (not the mum) always attacked him. Then after 2 months he stopped and the mum started to attack him. And it wasn't unfair, when I got him he had a bit of ear missing bless him. Behaviour wise he is well toilet trained, if a little fussy sometimes. But he has always refused to go outside but sits at the windows and howls when he can see birds in the trees and scratches at the window as if he wants to go out but if you were to open the window he runs for it. He licks stuff a lot, mainly me when he comes for a cuddle. And he follows me around when I'm walking around the house. He will sprint to come into the bathroom with me in the morning and has only recently learnt that it's not the time for a cuddle and if he can't get in then he waits outside. He is a very nervous cat sudden noises (things like someone coughing) make him run and hide. He also has mad 5minutes where he runs up and down the hallway jumping on the sofas. As soon as you call him over he calms down and is fine. He is a bit strange with other cats too he doesn't understand that some are very territorial. I had to live with my mum for a couple of weeks cause our roof was damaged and I'm pregnant so was too dangerous to live there. My mums cats were not happy with him being there but he would follow them around and if he got to close they would growl and he would just cower and they would walk off and off he would go again following them. It's like he couldn't understand why they wouldn't want to play with him.

I'm not massively worried because he is generally very affectionate (apart from the odd jumping out from behind the curtains batting you legs with his paws,no claws, and then wonders off) and I am fine that he is a little strange and love his quirkiness. But just want to make sure he is happy. An there isn't anything wrong or possibly upsetting him.

He eats drinks and goes toilet fine as well.

Any comments appreciated! Thank youfor reading this essay!!!

Re: Cat possibly got some mummy issues...

Hi welcome to the forum. We need pics forum rules ,please. He sounds like a typical kitten to me.Mad running around, eyeing up the birds through windows, playfighting all healthy kitten behaviour. How old is he and is he neutered.I ask because if you are intending for him to have access to the outdoors he needs to be neutered before being allowed out for his own safety or he will wander off looking for females.Does he have lots of toys and climber/scratch posts to occupy him as well as you playing with him.Im sure he is quite happy.

Bless him, poor chap had a rough start didn't he? Yes he sounds quirky but that's cats.

Play with him and give him lots of cuddles and he'll be happy.

Sounds like he's not keen to go outside but then he doesn't need to since he's good with his litter tray.

Maybe you could get him a little girl companion as it sounds like he wants somebody to play with? I recently got as girlfriend for my boycat and and they are so funny together, playing, chasing, stalking and licking each other, it is so sweet to watch.

He sounds lovely, hope it all goes well.

Re: Cat possibly got some mummy issues...

He sounds a lot like my kitten actually, apart from the nervousness, but he had a rough start to life so that's expected. My kitten runs around like a mentalist, climbing the walls etc. He also follows me around EVERYWHERE. God forbid I shut the bathroom door to have a pee, he sits there meowing incessantly til I let him in. He also follows my older (less playful) cat around even when she tells him off and bats him over the head. He doesn't care, just wants to play!

So he sounds perfectly normal to me! But buffie is right, we definitely need photos!

Haha pictures are fiiine! [IMG]

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/IMG]

The first picture is when I first got him.

He can't really be classed as a kitten I don't think because he is nearly two now.... I think...

And yes he is neutered. He started attacking my house mate who I lived with when I first got him (and only her bless her, he would wait for her and jump out on her) and with claws - they weren't the best of friends at first lol

This is him the other day he has become quite attached to my ever growing bump.

And this is him just now after a few attempts to get him to look at the computer and stop turning his head at the last second and becoming a bluurrr.

Toys wise he won't play with proper cat toys, he chases tennis balls, and christmas decorations. He has a scratching post which I got for him when he was a kitten with a bed on top, which he will only use. Despite the big fancy thing I went out and brought with a bigger bed on it which he has turned his nose up. he would rather squeeze himself onto the small bed on his old scratching post and hang limbs what not over the side.

As long as he is happy I'm fine, if he doesn't want to go outside it doesn't matter, I will try him in the summer again and sit out with him, but its too cold to keep the door open for him while he builds up the courage to take a step and then the wind blows and its back to square one.

Re: Cat possibly got some mummy issues...

Wow what a handsome boy .He looks perfectly happy to me and as for the not wanting to go out,I have to be honest and say I am an indoor cat fan.None of mine have ever been outdoors as I dont think it is safe for them out there. If your happy and he's happy keep it as it is ,then you can be sure he is safe.
