Playing or fighting?

We have just got a new cat from the RSPCA, she has been with us for about a month now. I am unsure whether she is fighting with our other cat or just playing.

There is no noise when the so called fight is happening, so should i just let it end on its own or stop it?

They are going into a cattery in a months time when we go on holiday and they will be sharing so i am hoping it is just playing.

Sami is the new cat, she has been speyed and is a stray, when she first arrived she didn't get on with Jay, a male also speyed, she would hiss at him and everything but i think that was just due to fear.

I don't think they will ever be the best of friends but they do sit next to each other on the windowsil, so they can't hate each other.

So is it playing or fighting?

Re: Playing or fighting?

It's most likely them trying to see who is going to be top cat, which is common in multi cat houses or when a new cat is introduced. Just keep an eye on them

Welcome by the way

Re: Playing or fighting?

I think it is probably a bit of a power struggle thing! Mine are always the same when a new one is introduced and then the fighting becomes playing after a while.

Just make sure they don't get too rough as if they get an infected wound, it can be pretty nasty

Re: Playing or fighting?

I have a maine coon neutered female(Bindi - yes I know not politically correct but not my choice and who has been a queen) 3 years od and a semi feral moggie (White Cat - yes I know sorry for name) whom we think is female and must have been neutered at some time (not by us).

White cat has been with us 4-5 years and lives outside or comes in but only when it suits her. When I got Bindi in May there was a lot of hissing and growling and paw swatting. I couldn't separate them in the traditional way but I did do a lot of transference smell stroking and talking to each of them in turn.

We now have a cuddle up to each other situation and a lot of sniffing bottoms which I find intriguing and confusing - why? It's like dogs!

The neutered male is now definitely number 3 in the pecking order even though he is twice their size!

So it does get better over time though I would definitely advocate supervision in first weeks.

I would say that you will know if there fighting as there not normally quite about it and there would be a mass of fur and plenty of bite marks. They are probably finding there feet and discovering who the boss is. If theres not spitting hissing or raised fur then i wouldnt worry to much. I would say some cats arent best friends but they normally tolirate each other.

Re: Playing or fighting?

Thanks all for the replies.

I thought it was playing, they do bite each other but i don't think they hurt each other more like nipping. As soon as one makes a noise they seperate and go there seperate ways.

They sit next to each on the windowsil with no problems and eat out of the same food bowl even though they have there own.

Re: Playing or fighting?

it could be fighting beacause they want to know whos top cat kinda like a leader.but it can also be just playing that they do alot.you should go ask a local vet or a good cat breeder.

Re: Playing or fighting?

My two love each other and they still indulge in 'play fighting' if it gets too much for either of them they get up and walk away. Ifyours share food from the same bowl I would say they get on - do they groom each other?

Re: Playing or fighting?

Thanks both for the replies, sadly Sami had to be taken back to the RSPCA as she was just fighing with Jay at every possible moment, they were chasing each other throughout the night and waking the kids up because they were jumping on there beds.
I just felt it was better if she went to a new home as she was such a lovely cat and it wasn't fair on either of them to be stressed out.
