Betty and Barney's behaviour.

Hi everyone.

I was hoping that someone could give me some advice on a few questions.

I have 2 kittens, Betty and Barney and they are 3 and a half months old now. They have had their second lot of vaccinations but are not spayed or neutered yet.

1. When they are playing together, Barney will always be a bit too rough for Betty's liking and she sometimes hisses but not all the time. They sleep near each other and seem to like each other. Why is she doing this?

2. When Betty has drunk some water she makes this wierd noise and then stops - but then she is fine. I noticed that today.

3. Betty has a sensitive stomach and the other week she got diarrhoea and then it cleared up on probiotic and now she has started again. Barney was worse on the probiotic. We have not changed their food - we feed them Morrisons own kitten food and dry food. They have water throughout the day.

Could carpet, cardboard, licking stuff affect their tummys?

4. Betty sometimes looks depressed also, well kittens have those faces its just that sometimes she acts depressed and sleeps most of the time which i know what kittens and cats do. I don't quite know what is up with her sometimes, sometimes when we stroke her she meows for no reason?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Betty and Barney's behaviour.

Hello and welcome

I can only assume Betty is hissing because Barney is being too rough and she is putting him straight. I think they are just sorting themselves out.

Does she growl if so, that's just her saying back off pall I haven't finished yet. One of mine growls. I do stop him because I don't want his behaviour to escalate.

Diarrhoea can be a number of things, from worms, diet, other. If you haven't changed their food and they are in good health chances are they need de-worming treatment.

Meowing as opposed to purring when you stroke her I take a meow as I'm not really comfy with this situation, however purring I see as a sign of contentment. May be Betty needs a little space. One of my kittens likes his own space the other sticks to me like glue.

No doubt other forum members will be able to give you better and a more in depth reply.

Sue

You reply is fine Sue, very good advice
The only thing I would add is that maybe do a trial and error with their food. It could be that their food is too rich. You could try a high meat content, something like Hi Life 60% meat or fish or Natures Menu

I would second the advice given.

Try changing to a high animal protein diet. I did that with my adult adoptees and poo smell now is non-existant and no longer soft but firm.

Re: Betty and Barney's behaviour.

I 3rd Sue's response, also maybe try a light diet of white chicken only, sardines, tuna or white fish, cheap, easy to cook if needs be and very affective, plus you can mish and mash them in a few ways to vary (in their mind)what they are getting Good luck with your Flintstone babies, great names btw and i'm sure once they have been neutered/spayed they will calm down quite a lot with each other

Re: Betty and Barney's behaviour.

Thanks for all the advice.

I thought of something else as well that maybe due to their behaviour, the fact that they want to go outside! When we go to work in a morning they just run out onto the step, i then bring them back in and go. They sniff the air and everything and also I have noticed that they climb up to the windowsill and sit there for ages and look out. Its cute but they cant go out til they have been spayed and neutered.

Re: Betty and Barney's behaviour.

Hi missy,

In reply to question 1......its perfectly normal for cats/kittens to play with eachother and for some 'shouting' etc going on.

Mine do exactly the same when playing but one always gives up and walks away - only after a little hissing and meowing though!

And question 4........i often worry about this as my kitties have very sad faces lol! I dont think they are depressed though, i'd only start to worry if they went off their food, fell poorly or changed in any other way

Re: Betty and Barney's behaviour.

Mine don't go out at all, unless it's in the runs or a wander around our yard, which is totally cat proofed. They quite often sit looking out of the windows. They're not sad at all, they enjoy watching the world go by in safety, lol

Re: Betty and Barney's behaviour.

sometimes you have to juggle diets with new ones. just like us they don't like or their bodies don't agree with everything. try some different diet stuff as suggested above and if you are still worried give the vets a ring and see if you can get the neutered so you don't risk any accidental kittens!

Re: Betty and Barney's behaviour.

I have looked at Natures Menu and it only specifies food for cats not kittens.

I will have a look on here about kitten food because I haven't looked at what is out there.

Thanks
