Cat litter usage or total lack of it

We have 3 beautiful cats and a border collie cross. Cats - One neutered male about 5 years old, a 4 year old spayed female and a 3 year old not spayed female.

Since the introduction of the youngest female, the male is urinating around the house occasionally, not always, just ocassionally.

The unspayed female is defecating right outside the cat litter, yet urinating in it. She is also now urinating by our front door. Even if she sees us she continues to do it.

The 4 year old spayed female has no issues using the cat litter for both.

After a ruined carpet and now the replacement wooden floor, I'm losing the will.

All three are house cats with two large cat litters using catsan

What advice can people give to help this situation as I have no clue what to do now? Our vet was totally useless as they had no suggestions apart from 'some cats just do this'? Surely there is something that I can try?

Re: Cat litter usage or total lack of it

I suspect it maybe the fact that a new unspayed female has come into their home that is causing the unwanted messing. Most likely stress related.

As a rule of thumb you should have one litter tray per cat plus one extra. It could be something as simple as your 'older' cats don't like using the tray that the new cat has been in.

Always clean any accidents up with biological washing powder to take away the smell and thus discourages reusing the same spot.

A feliway plug in adapter may also help calm things down

I am no expert and I am sure someone more expereinced will be along to help you soon

SeaThreePeeO has given you some excellent advice
The unspayed female is asserting her dominance in the hierarchy by leaving her scent. Unless she is a breeding cat I would suggest that you have her spayed as soon as possible and follow the rest of SeaThreePeeO's suggestions, especially regarding the Feliway

Re: Cat litter usage or total lack of it

Just to echo what the others said...introducing a new cat is quite hard. Basically, we gave the newbie a base in the spare room, and she gradually was introduced to the others. We have 3 cats and 5 litter trays...and lots of Feliway, but all is good now, but this is quite a few months later.
I didn't really look much at forums then, so I read some Vicky Halls books, and just did what she said.

Re: Cat litter usage or total lack of it

Agree with everything already said, but will stress ,for the health of your unspayed female get her neutered ASAP.It is not doing her health or stress levels any good constantly being in an "in season"cycle.
