Random toilet choice

Arthur has been allowed to go out for a week now - he's slowly getting used to the cat flap but is still using his litter tray inside for both 1's and 2's.

However yesterday and this morning both me and hubby cleared up a poop from the carpet near the back door next to the cat flap - they were pefectly healthy and deliberate rather than an runny accident (sorry if TMI). His litter trays are in the kitchen and he had been using them fine until yesterday. He's still peeing in them fine but not pooping .

I have moved one of the trays near the back door to try and prevent further accidents but if he's going to keep using the trays long term (rather than outside) I'd rather it not be the first thing my guests see (and smell) when they come in, plus the kitchen has a wipe clean floor.

Any ideas on why he might have chosen to poop here?
There has never been a litter tray in this area, or any accidents by my other cats so there is no reason for him to be confused over scents as far as I can tell.

Also, is there any way to wean him off trays and onto outside just out of curiousity?

Re: Random toilet choice

The cat flap is fully open - they can all come and go as they please. We have has another cat in a few years ago but it got chased away pretty quickly by the girls - I've never noticed any other cats in our garden, let alone in the house.

He did go in the tray I moved to the back door so at least he's not gone on the carpet again.

Just seemed a bit strange that he's been using his trays fine in the 5 weeks he's been here and suddenly we then have two carpet poops for no real reason.

He is a bit confused with the whole idea of 'outside' at the moment so maybe he just got spooked or a bit over excited.
