Smile She will only be affectionate when I'm standing!

Hi guys,

great to see and read all the replies to the questions. So helpful!

I'm a first time cat-mummy, I love my girls and I think they are doing great! We got them from a rescue centre when they were 4 months and although it's taken them some time to trust us and be affectionate they're slowly coming round.

One of them though is much more nervous, unsure or twitchy, I don't know how to describe. She doesn't really trust us so much. Lately she has started to come to greet me and rub her head against my legs, which I take as a sign of love, however she will do this only when I'm standing, even if I have already put the food down (which I thought would be the cause of her I-love-you-mummy eyes and display of sounds and strokes).

Anybody has any idea why this could be and how I can make her trust us more?

Re: She will only be affectionate when I'm standing!

To be honest it sounds like you're doing ok hun xx

These things can take time and if you just persevere then she'll eventually realise that she can trust you fully, however that doesn't always mean she'll end up being overly affectionate lapcat, but at least the trust will be there xx

anyway, you should count yourself lucky it's when you're standing, my non affectionate girl does this to me if i'm trying to have a quiet pee, it's slightly annoying - no peace pmsl xx

Oh yeah! I know that one! The love following us to the bathroom. It hink it is because it is the last territory to be explored (we keep the door closed).

Then they'll come and start snooping around and looking at me with 'what the hel you doing' faces

PMSL!!

In my lots case it's revenge for me waiting for them to finish in the litter box (MC's have a tendency to like to cover their ablusions for about 10 minutes after they've gone!! lol) xx

Re: She will only be affectionate when I'm standing!

Actually she is accepting you as its cat family

This from here:

CAT COMMUNICATION

"Cats have scent glands on the chin, lips (in the corners), temples and at the base of the tail. Each cat has its own scent signature. When it washes, a cat transfers its scent from these glands to its fur. This scent is then transferred to objects the cat rubs against - a fencepost, twiggy plants, a doorway or a person's legs. For example, most of my doors have a grey greasy mark at cat's cheek level where Cindy marks them over and over again.

They use this scent to mark areas and objects around them, other cats, humans and other animals in the household. This helps create a communal smell. A new cat must literally rub up to superior members of the group to mix their scents before becoming an accepted member of the group."
