Old cat to new owners!! Help needed
We have taken on my nans cat as my nan cant look after her anymore and we need some help.
The Cat is 18ish years old and used to live in the countryside although in her latter years has pretty much lived in the greenhouse as its nice and warm. Now she is living in a town and is living inside although does go out as we have got a small area where she can walk around without getting lost. We have bought her a lovely new bed and litter tray and the vet says that she should be fine with those and she knows what they are but the cat is so damn stubborn!! She refuses to use the bed (although so far she got in it to pee!!!!!) she ignores the litter box and sleeps on the tiled floor. Please can someone tell me how I can train her to use the litter tray so she stops peeing and pooping on what she shouldnt! Help ![]() |

Re: Old cat to new owners!! Help needed
She might know what they are, but they are not what she's used to. Poor old girl. It will be a big shock to her to be moved at such an age and be expected to change her routine. Try to think of things from her point. At 18, you might not get her to use a litter tray.
Is there anything in the greenhouse she lay on ? could you have that in your house for her. Cats will sleep where they want anyway, we have alsorts here for our cats to sleep on or in, but sometimes they are happy just to sleep on a window sill or floor. |

Re: Old cat to new owners!! Help needed
Hi guys thanks for that.
Putney (the cat) is like a new cat now she is living with us and seems to have a new lease of life bounding around like a kitten, she has no trouble stepping in and out of litter tray as she used to sleep in a washing basket with high sides, we brought that back with us but the vet told us to throw away the blanket she slept on in it as it was absolutely disgusting and was ruining her fur!! Dont ask how he's the vet so we took his word for it. Her fur was pretty awful. She wont even go in her basket and I know that she may not change her ways (You can tell she is one of us as she is just as stubborn lol) Do you think if I put soil in her litter tray instead of cat litter she might use it as she did used to go out of the greenhouse under a tree to do her business?? |

Re: Old cat to new owners!! Help needed
If she was used to going outside soil will probably be the answer.
You could then very, very gradually introduce a litter that would be more acceptable to you. You would mix desired litter with the soil, gradually increasing the litter and decreasing the soil. If she cannot get to grass, she might like some brought in to eat or you can buy special cat grass to grow, I think.... I wouldn't worry about the bed - remember its hot outside and tiles are cool to lie on. Cats are notorious for sleeping anywhere but where you would like them to. |
