Kitten found any advice

The day before yesterday one of my cats kept meowing and wouldn't come in. When I went to investigate I found that he was with a small kitten. Eventually they both came in. The kitten looked quite well cared for and is very friendly so obviously has had a home. The following day enquiries revealed he lived in a house which is now shut up and looks like no one living there now Kitten acts like he has always lived here, even knew where the litter tray was!!) and shows no signs of wanting to leave - I've had him outside at times to see if he does "go home" including all the first night and some of last night but no he's stuck around. I reckon he's about 3-4 months old and has a lovely personality and just seems so happy to be inside (not sure how long he was out in the cold as we were away for a while). He just sits down and purrs constantly.

The problem is I can't keep him as I really can't afford another cat. I won't send him back outside so will look after him until I can find him a nice home. Not really sure how to go about rehoming him, other than obvious ask around if anyone wants him. Does anyone have any ideas - its still possible someone is missing him - tried to take him to vets to have him scanned but they were shut. Is there anywhere else I could take him for this? Are there any organisations who would be able to help? I live in Leeds. Is anyone on this forum interested or know anyone?

I'd be grateful for any advice on this. Also, my other cat (not the one who "found" him but another one ) doesn't seem very pleased that he's here and I've kept them apart so far any advice on this?

My guess is that his people are away, though why he is outside is another matter - it could be that whoever is supposed to be looking after him let him out. I think you need to hold on to him until after the new year. If his people have not returned by then, advertise him - gumtree, preloved, pets4homes.

Re: Kitten found any advice

If he has come from the closed up house there are two possibilities: either they moved, let the cat out, and he has found his way back. Or, they have moved and left him behind. I got one of my own cats that way.

I believe the RSPCA can do a scan for you, or the PDSA, and possibly some of the animal shelters, the bigger ones. If no result from there, then you should I think try Cat Protection League, Blue Cross, even RSPCA at a push, and try to put some posters up.

A would keep him myself, but only you know what you can afford.

Well done for taking the kittie in. The vets should be open again soon if you can wait to check for the chip, otherwise try your local RSPCA or CPL as already mentioned.

Re: Kitten found any advice

thank you for caring for this little kitten. Here are a list of rescues that may be able to help. They will carry out home checks and make sure that he goes to a good home. Please dont advertise on gumtree etc, I have read many horror stories of people taking on cats and kittens from these sites for terrible reasons.

I agree. Definitely do not advertise him, especially not for free.

Re: Kitten found any advice

I do hope his owners turn up, or that you decide there is room for a small one after all!
Personally I would not be so quick to dismiss Gumtree etc, I am not saying that none of us have heard stories about cats being taken for dog fighting etc, but I honestly believe that there are MANY more happy re-homings than bad ones. Nice people DO look on Gumtree.....I have 2 spoilt young cats here that I found that way and have several friends that have also found their new companion on the site.

Re: Kitten found any advice

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply. I think this is the first time I've posted on here. What a kind and helpful lot you are

I don't think the people in kitty's old house have just gone away for a few days, though I did at first. Its very close to mine and Kitty has shown no interest in going back there. Think they've gone for good and left her . I remember neighbours saying before that the kitten was always being put out on its own and at night too. Someone tried taking her back once but couldn't get a reply. She she did seem to be getting looked after in some way so I didn't give it much thought at the time. Anyway, our vet was open today so I got her scanned and as I suspected no chip.

The good news is that I have found her a great home to go to now where I know she will be really happy My mum! She said she would never have another cat after her last one died a few years ago but the plight of Kitty (now called Lyla) has moved her so ..its a happy ending for this one Someone kindly sent me a list of local shelters and I'm glad I won't be needing them ... I only hope all the poor mites in the shelters also find homes.

Two happy endings in one day! How wonderful.

Oh that is really great news! I'm sure your mum will take much better care of Lyla than her previous owners ever could have done.

I love a happy ending
