Unhappy Help... cat has red sore - what is it?

Hi all

I just noticed (was going to give her brush - molting!!!) that my little Neo has a red sore on her back... just next to her left shoulder blade.
Yesterday and the day before it just looked like matted down fur and I thought that she has just got something on her (not sure what as she only stays in my room... she refuses to go out and hides under the sofa if I have my shoes on and look at her!!

But I am wondering if it's connected to the Bob Martin Flea & Tick drops... which I put on her about 3/4 days ago... but I'm sure I put it further up by her neck but she hates this stuff so she squirms... so it's possible that I did get a bit there... has she over cleaned the area? but if it's an allergy/intolerance to the stuff then why isn't there a scab further up at the back of her neck?

this is the second packet of the stuff I've used in the last year and nothing happened the other times.

should I take her to the vets now? or leave it for another day or so and keep an eye on it... might get better? (I'm a mature student with no job! I don't think the Tesco's pet insurance covers red patchy areas )

she doesn't flinch and I even touched it (washed my hands first - I don't want to make it worse!) and she didn't even notice.

am I being a drama queen or should I make an appointment with the vets now? (I need to join a local one actually!!)

I've added some pics - but my slr focus was having issues with the fur and they haven't come out very well... the white streek is her white patch on her shoulder blade

ps: any tips on getting rid of 'dandruff'... she goes through phases of having that quite bad... she lives indoors and she was a stray that had been badly neglected.

thank you for your help

Yes I would think that it would be as a result of the flea treatment. I know when I frontline some of mine they have a sore on the back of the neck afterwards.

I don't want to alarm you but have a read of this

Never use supermarket flea products!

The product used was Bob Martin. Personally I wouldn't use it on my cats.

I would keep an eye on the sore it and it will probably get better by itself. I've never had to take mine to vets because of it

My cat had Frontlilne for some time and then suddenly developed an allergy to it. Came up all red and itchy.

Can't see from the photos but you don't think its an abcess thats burst do you? When cats get bitten by other cats you very often don't see wounds under the fur until they burst.

I got that product because I thought it was a good name!!!
she refused worming tablets and got the drops for that which was fine... and she had this several times so I assumed it would be fine.

I'll chuck the rest of the packet... keep buying stuff for her and it ends up in the bin, lol - fussy little furball!

I'll keep checking it to make sure it doesn't get any worse.. it was fine yesterday and as I said she doesn't seem fused by it at all (maybe she knows that she would be shoved in the cat carrier and off to the vets )

thanks for your help

she hates going out so she hasn't been bitten.

I took her in the garden the other week but I had to sit with her (she's too scared to go where other cats/people are) - but one of those very large (still in 'kittenhood') designer cats out there and Neo, who was once very fearful of other cats now charges /hisses at all cats - I think the designer cat could have taken my Neo with one swipe of a paw
but there was no fight... Neo just sat next to me all the time and looking like she wanted to go back in... she was very happy when I let her.

I try to take her out now and then to see if her confidence has increased ... which it has over many months and she is getting better but as she now tries to start fights because she was attacked by them when she was a stray and undernourished (painfully so... and broken nose!) - I guess she's fearful of attack but having a home and her health back she's now prepared to fight her ground.

when I looked yesterday night it was just flat fur... like oil had flatterned the hair down... I tried to separate the hairs but didn't want to tug too hard... it didn't look painful at all, just stuck down hair.

thanks for your help

yeah the photo's didn't come out well... hard to see.
unless an abcess can come up in a few hours and then burst ... but I just don't think it's that... I think there would be a 'slight' circular edging around the red bits... or bits of skin etc but it's more of a patch of red sore skin... I'm wondering if she's over washed it because it was a burn from those drops and that's made it come up like this.

it's hard to know really... I haven't had pets in years... I could never get a cat as I live in a small place and move a lot... I've had guinea pigs and hamsters (cat replacement therapy ) but Neo moved in with me... it's better to have a small home than none at all - I tried to find a home for her but they never turned up ... she trusts me now so I think I'm stuck with her, lol (I don't mind at all)... gonna be a pain when moving to find somewhere that will except a small shy cat

thanks

Where is the best place to get worming and flea products? (Neo just wont eat her food if I mash up a worming tablet) hence why I went for the drop type.

She will need worming soon!

Re: Help... cat has red sore - what is it?

Hiya hun

Just echoing the other advice you have had re the worming and flea treatments.

You have a few options. Pets at home sell frontline and drontol off the shelf, every vet will sell you frontline and drontol/panacur, and you can buy these all online too! If you want one of the "newer" combi spot ons (there are various brands) then you would need a vet consultation and have it prescribed.

AS for the spot. It could be related to the flea treatment, it could be where a tic had been attatched and has got slightly infected, and it could also be something else entirely.

If its not cleared up by the weekend then its time for a trip to the vets to get it checked out. In the meantime wash it with cool boiled salty water, and make sure you wash your hands thoroughly just incase its something infectious like the early stages of ringworm.

You have had some excellent advice on your cat's spot, so I thought I would chirp in to address your question re dandruff.

You could get some evening primrose oil for pets - that not only will address the dandruff but will also help the healing of that sore. Alternatively, get some salmon oil and feed that daily for a week or two to condition the fur and skin. You will see results pretty quickly. Or you could get some brewer's yeast flakes and sprinkle some on for a while. Or some velcote. Lots of options, and any of these are full of vitamins and fatty acidsto help with skin condition.
