Pain killers for cats?

Are there any pain killers cats can have off the vet which dont involve going & haveing an injection of Metacam

Simba's age seems to have caught up with him & he is finding it very hard to jump He had a check over last wednesday & the vet couldnt find anything wrong & thought he prob suffering from arthritus & just jarred his hip & gave him a jab of Metacam & he was fine but it must have worn off yesterday & we are back to square one now We have Metacam for one of the dogs he has to have it everyday but it goes in his food, I know cats are different & dont want him to have the cat version to much but is it available in a medcine form or is always injected

My cat Lulu is on liquid Metacam administered by syringe at the moment for tooth problems. It is awkward, sticky stuff and you get more on yourself than down the cat usually. I'm not really happy with it as my mum's cat was on it for about a year and then nearly died recently with a very severe liver inflammation.

Thanks Daisyandchlo & Lulu's owner I think he is going to end up haveing to have it unless there is something potentially less harmful he can have

Have you tried putting it on some wafer thin ham for Lulu? & how's the new diet going or is it to early to tell yet

Lulu's not good at chewing but maybe I should try putting it in her food. I must admit I have let the new diet slip the past few days because I am so preoccupied with Louis' dreadful illness and I keep putting food out to try and tempt him and she steals it so I have sort of lost hope, feeling a bit pessimistic I suppose. Her gums bled today when I put the syringe in her mouth and I wasn't being rough or anything. She hated the slippery elm and honey and gagged when I rubbed it on her gums, then started snorting a lot and sneezing and the vet said it was going down the wrong way so it was best to stop.

Re: Pain killers for cats?

What a nightmare you are haveing at the mo

I would imagine you'd have to be very careful not to get it down the wrong way but if you have to rub it into the gum maybe you could mix it in some cat tooth paste our vet told us they only have to lick the tooth paste off your finger & they then tend to swish it round their mouth by themselfs but not convinsed about that butter maybe, sorry not being much help x

Re: Pain killers for cats?

What you want is the supplement cosequin for cats, . this is a glucosamine, chondroitin, msn supplement for arthritis.

It is very effective for senior kitties suffering arthritis pain. Completely safe, no side effects.

http://www.nutramaxlabs.com/Vet/Prod...-for-cats.aspx

they also have dasequin for cats now too (same manufacturer) which some say is better.

.

Re: Pain killers for cats?

by the way, I am compelled to add this. I know metacam is approved for use in cats in Europe, and many do, but it is known to cause acute kidney failure in cats, and I would not recommend using it, except in a "nothing to lose" situation and certainly not for a senior cat.

Metacam should never be dispensed without blood work being done first to check the kidney function of the cat, and frequent blood work thereafter, while the cat is on the metacam.

Re: Pain killers for cats?

Thanks for all the info lorilu

Yes we are aware about the Metacam effects on cats I dont like haveing to give it to our dog everyday for the rest of his life he then has to have a blood test every year to chek he's ok we also have Synoquin for dogs & I think its made a huge difference to him but asked the vet about it for cats & he said yes there is the same sort of thing for cats but wasnt convinced it did any good for cats

Anyway the adult Maine Coon food has glucosomine etc it in so I bought a bag of that & Simba has be munching on it at tea times so hope it does some good Louie has been trying to eat it to but his big teeth are still comeing through so struggles I think he's read the bag & thinks its just for him
