Raw chicken and upset stomach

Hi

I am trying to change over to a raw diet supplemented with Natures Menu pouches and (eventually - its on order) ORIJEN. At the moment the dry is Royal Canin Maine Coon which the breeder fed to them.

The cat is adult, male, neutered - 2 and half years old.

Raw chicken/turkey seems to cause diarrhoea. It has been frozen and defrosted and it is human consumption quality from local supermarket.

I am now semi cooking it. Raw beef and raw lamb don't seem to cause a problem.

Any ideas what I may do to improve tolerance?

Also neither of the cats like the NM's fish and chicken pouch and will leave it after licking off the jelly!

Hi,

Be careful if you are cooking the chicken as this softens the bones which means it may splinter and cause problems.

Sounds like the rest of his diet is really good, I have heard really good stuff about Orijen and we use the Nature menu pouches and they are the best around to be honest. If he likes chicken then why not just cook it fully and put it down chopped up. I use raw rabbit which seems to go down well and not upset their tums, there is a great supplier called Woldsway I will try and find the link for you.

Jo

Re: Raw chicken and upset stomach

I wouldnt feed raw chicken, it carries salmonella, Giardia and Campalabacta. Some cats are ok but i have heard it upsetting quite a few tums, i dont feed raw so not sure.

If you want to feed chicken then Ive heard the wings are great, just boil them for 4 or 5 mins & let them cool.

Re: Raw chicken and upset stomach

I feed a lot of raw food. Mince beef, rabbit, and the odd raw chicken wings. I don't feed raw mince chicken or turkey. But they do have that cooked, not with any bones in though, never give cooked chicken or turkey bones, too dangerous I also feed Natures menu pouches.
Heres a link for the natures menu web site, you can find your nearest stockist off there too, the minced beef I get from Asda. Hope that helps Jane

ok thanks for helpful advice

Will cook the chicken meat without bones - in water quicly on hob. Will look at the rabbit - got a website link - not sure if same one.

I got confused with chicken becuse of the raw prey diet where raw chicken was shown - drumsticks and wings

I feed Cooked chicken and Turkey or raw, never part cooked as white meat should never be eaten part cooked, if you do you risk salmonella, Gardie and Campilabacta

Re: Raw chicken and upset stomach

My two get raw chicken regularly (as well as beef and lamb), never had a problem with it. Cat's digestive systems are totally different to ours and the chances of them being affected by Salmonella etc is very low, especially if they are regularly fed a raw diet.
