Feeding up a cat

My current foster kitty was severely neglected by her previous owners. She arrived with me yesterday after having had an emergency C-section to remove 4 dead kittens.

Remarkably through all this she's still very affectionate & was cuddled up on the sofa with me last night ! Her behaviour is very good & she's found her "spot" in J's wardrobe on his old dressing gown.

However, she's severely underweight. She must weigh less than 2kg and that's an exaggeration. She's nothing but skin and bone! I had to clean off caked on "muck" from her body & the towels I used were brown when I'd finished. She was in a bad way yesterday but she's doing really well & looks so much better today.

How do I feed her up? Is it possible to overfeed an underweight cat? I've got her on go-cat indoor dry cat food (down all the time for her) and 2 pouches of felix per day.

What else can I feed her?

It may be an idea to change her over to a premium food such as Royal Canin or Hills or James Wellbeloved. You could also try her on kitten food as that may help her pack on a bit of weight.

Re: Feeding up a cat

Personally, from own experience of feeding up my two underweigt babies, i'd steer clear of dry and kitten food is a gimmick. I'd give them, if u can, a little and often good quality wet food, bozita is what i used. And cooked chicken etc as treats. If u can, raw feeding would be really good for her too, food4cats do a taster pack for ten quid. Dry if full of filler and rubbish they don't need. Kitten milk might be good too. Bless her, hope she starts to pile on the weight! X

Scrambled egg can help too as mine have sensitive tummies and this has really helped with them putting on weight with out upsetting their tums, they get one egg each a day and love it, kitten milk is good but can be a little too rich for mine.

Re: Feeding up a cat

I think like the other posts little and often with the food.
You could try her on some fish and later pilchards (oily fish).
Poor little soul Hope she will feel a lot better soon.
I am sure with all your help and loving care you are giving her she will be just fine.
Thank goodness there are good kind people like you around.

Re: Feeding up a cat

Thanks for all your advice! Before reading this thread again I'd been out to buy her some kitten food as I had a pregnant mum on that last year & it seemed to help her (and the RSPCA recommended it).

I'm on a very low budget so switching to a high quality cat food isn't really an option. I'd love to though!

We're going to cook up some chicken for the week & she's going to get some of that. I also gave her some cat milk earlier which she wolfed down (just a small amount) and am feeding her small and often.
