Feline Herpes in Eye - any treatments known?
My son took two cats from a Rescue Centre - one of which had Feline Herpes - was treated - but eye still weeps constantly. He bathes it several times a day with sterile saline.
We read on the internet of the following medications and wondered whether they were only available in USA or whether any could be sourced here: 1) Lysine 2) Herplex drops 3) Viroptic drops 4) Vira -A Would anyone have knowledge of any of the above or indeed of any eye medication for this condition which can be sourced in UK. Thank you in anticipation of help. |

Re: Feline Herpes in Eye - any treatments known?
When I adopted my rescue boy 3 years ago, he was 9 then, and his eyes were clear. However after a few weeks they became runny, so I took him to the vet. After several days of antibiotic eye ointment (chloramphenicol it was which is widely available and cheap) it cleared up. Happened again not long after, same treatment. Anyway the vet said that they figured it was herpes, and that stress(leaving owner, being in kennels, coming here to a 3 dog/1 cat household) had brought the episodes on. Another thought was hayfever/grass allergy.
Anyway, he settled in fine, and after that first summer of on/off eye probs, hasn't had it since. So, I advise : 1- eliminate any possible stress factors 2-get a Feliway diffuser, keeps cats calm 3- bathe as you are with clean cotton wool pad for each eye, dipped in salted, cooled boiled water. followed by 4-Chloramphenicol ointment in each eye 4 times a day, continue for 2 days after eyes clear up. maximum use for 7 days in total. Vet told me that a very high % of cats carry the herpes virus, and stress can bring it out. Some cats never show symptoms. please will you update us on this? |

Re: Feline Herpes in Eye - any treatments known?
Thanks for replies - Yes the Rescue Centre informed my son that the Centre Vet had confirmed Herpes. Poor 'Obi' was in the Centre for over 8 months - nobody would take him because of the Herpes Eye - but my son always goes for the 'under-cat'!! He also took his sister 'Callie' who iwas very nervous and attached to Obi. She meticulously grooms him frequently - including his sore eye - so she probably has it too but it doesn't show in any way.
Thanks for the article link Selk67U2 - looked up the Omega Inteferon mentioned and it costs £279 - WOW!!! The chloramphenicol looks interesting - I have always used that for eye infections in children - will look it up for cats and report back. Thanks again all. |

Hi Liz,
Try different vets for the Interferon, I have used this in the past and it certainly didn't cost me that much. I have also found Optrex for infected eyes works wonders and regular bathing. Cold tea particularly camomile is very very soothing and will bring a great deal of comfort to the cat.Bicarb of soda is also another good one. Plenty to try there so hopefully something will work. I do hope you get it sorted, eye issues are such a nuisance, particularly as they can be so infectious too. Jo |

Re: Feline Herpes in Eye - any treatments known?
Hi liz,
Just a idea but why dont u use cold tea to clean his eyes with? I have 2 kittens here with scabby eyes and i've been doing it since thursday 3 times a day and they have lovely clear eyes now. I know this wont clear up anything serious but it might help a bit it also clears up conjuctivitous saves a trip to the vets x |

Thanks Jem - that might be useful in the future. However Obi's eye is quite clear at the moment - it just weeps clear fluid at the moment. We think the tear duct may have been damaged when he had the infection.
My son bathes it with his sterile contact lens solution and this seems to be quite good. I will pass on the cold tea info. in case it does get bad again. |
