Raw Food

I am seriously considering switching my 2 kittens to a raw diet.

I gave them some raw chicken skin last night and they ate it all up straight away. Currently they are on a variety of brands of high-quality wet food and they seem ok with all flavours. However, now that they are growing up and eating more I can see that this is going to start proving costly. I don't mind this too much as I'd prefer to pay more and give them better qualityfood. However, the more I look at the food the more I can see that most appear to be shredded meat in aspic, maybe with a few minerals added and that maybe it would be cheaper and better for them to just give them the meat?

So my question is how much would I need to feed a day, and how much would we be looking at cost wise?

Anything I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Raw Food

It isn't as simple as just giving them meat and that's it - but it isn't too hard either -- they need 80% muscle meat (inc heart), 10% other meat (kindey liver etc) and 10% bone. The way I find the best to make sure they are gettting everything that they need is to buy it ready made up from www.food4-cats.co.uk. It comes in ready made sausages of 400g - which are roughly 40-80p depending on the meat. You feed 2-3%of your cats body weight -- so a 400g sausage should last 2-4 days per cat depending how heavy they are.

Re: Raw Food

I can't find the sausages on the site?

Thanks for the help - could you tell me what your cats rough weekly diet would be?

Re: Raw Food

they aren't called sausages they just come as sausage shaped packages - very large sausage shaped packages - look for the minced meat.

mine have a mixture of stuff as i'm working myself through a load of bulk buys - raw, bozita, nature's menu, etc. I've just got a new girl who only eats fishy flavours so at the moment so she on tesco luxury. she won't touch what she came with!

Re: Raw Food

They come in 400gm plastic wrapped sausage shaped packages. One enhancement would be to mark the approx 100gm weight on the wrapper.

When you order the order is paced in a polystyreen box double wrapped to contain anything up to 15 kg - the charge for delivery is £6.00 ish but check when making order.

This is true - it would be good but as it's only 1/2s and 1/4s you are dealing with it's fairly simple, and probably not worth the cost of redesigning the packaging. I take the wrapper off before defrosting anyway. Delivery charge is £6 no matter how much you order - fill the freezer I say. My new girl has just deigned to eat some chicken mince so really happy.

Re: Raw Food

here are a couple of great sites about switching over onto raw for cats...we have been on raw for just over a week with my two and they are LOVING it...although slightly fussy

What I have been most impressed about it that in just over a week, their back teeth which were all yellow have started to clean off already! I am very impressed...oh and they poop less and it is less smelly

Raw Fed Cats (the 'Practical Guide' page is really useful)

Raw Feeding Felines - Home Page (story of how someone on my raw feeding yahoo list transferred her cats over onto raw)

This is also very interesting for cats or dogs regarding some of the myths around raw feeding! The Many Myths of Raw Feeding

If only it was that easy. Each type of meat has a different density and it also has a different density depending on whether it is minced fresh or frozen. As an example whilst the bags are all the same size, the chicken is longer than the beef and the lamb minced fresh is longer than the lamb minced frozen!

We will be offering a new size later in the year that is more convieniant for single cat households.
