Question Diarrhoea/loose stools BSH Female

Hi

I am new to the forum & am looking for help/advice re feeding my cat. I got her as an 18 month old adult & on the breeders advice feed her on JWB ocean fish/rice. However, Lily has always had a delicate stomach. Her previous owner had all sorts of tests run on her, all came back negative. She smells a bit around the back end & last time I took her for a check-up had to have her anal glands emptied. She always has a messy bum, I am hoping someone can suggest a different food. I have a GSD with a delicate tummy. I think many problems are caused by the amount of cereals/maize etc which are in many dried pet food products. I feed him raw in the morning & Burgess Supadog Lamb/Rice in the evenings. He has put on weight & his stools are normal (thank goodness) & he only goes 2 or possibly 3 times a day now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Diarrhoea/loose stools BSH Female

Could be a food allergy? Could be something like Trtrichomonas foetus which is extremely difficult for test for and requires more than 1 sample. Most vets don't even know what it is let alone understand the testing procedure for it.

Have you done the usual things i.e. fast for 24 hours and then feed solely chicken/white fish for a few weeks? Goats milk probiotic yoghurt added to the food? Protexin? a 3 day Panacur worming course?

Am just thinking of things as they spring to mind.

Re: Diarrhoea/loose stools BSH Female

A friend of ours had the same problem with cats. She put them on a raw and natural diet. Since then they've had no problems at all. It could be an allergy as already suggested by Schimmel. I think it's a case of trial and error.
Just wondering if Orijen would be suitable ? aj would know. Don't think that has any cereals/maize in
Not sure what to suggest really apart from whats already been posted

My macy was poorly when i got her, the vet put her on royal canin sensitive, then i got RC sensible from pet shop, this worked well. macy is lactose intollerant, and this will give her the squits

As usual I'm going to recommend Orijen. Completely grain/cereal free, 75% meat and 25% fruit, veg & botanicals. It's done wonders for my cats.

By definition cats are obligate carnivores and so must be fed a diet primarly based on meat in order to thrive, any food that has any kind of grain/cereal as it's first listed ingredient should be avoided.

I agree, have you seen blood in the stool?

TF is a parasite that lives in the cat's colon and causes chronic foul-smelling diarrhoea. The cat may cycle in and out of bouts of diarrhoea to varying degrees - stools may be loose/mushy/runny/liquid/cow-pie-like, and may sometimes contain blood or mucous, and may be accompanied by gas. Otherwise, most affected cats are healthy. Studies show that this may very well be the cause of "undiagnosed" diarrhoea in cats.

TF is becoming more known to vets and breeders, but there are still many who are unaware of this parasite. Most vets will test for the "usual" suspects that cause diarrhoea (Worms, Giardia, Coccidia, etc.) Typically, the tests are Neg., and the diarrhea is chalked up to IBD (Irritable Bowel Disorder)and the cat is placed on a "special diet".
The following are a couple of very good links to information on TF and treatment:

Digestive problems in cats ... monas.html

Food wise I would recommend orijen too, my bengal has a very delicate tum and it has taken me 3 months to sort her out, she was on felix (yuk!!) and royal canin (full of fillers) ive slowly weaned her onto natures menu and orijen we now have firm perfect poo's

Re: Diarrhoea/loose stools BSH Female

I am finding this discussion really interesting, having had a lot of poo problems with one of my cats, where can you buy Origen. We have just had the all clear for all parisites and worms (which has taken some time!!) we feed all of the cats on iams, only one of them seems to ever have a problem. The vet suggested looking at diet next if problem persists. Any advice is welcome
