Heart Murmur

I have had wee Chilli for 3 weeks now and she is 11 weeks old. On Friday I took her for a check-up and to register at the local vets and was really shocked to be told she has a slight heart murmur. Since she is so young he told me not to worry and the likelyhood is it will sort itself out, and since she is otherwise very healthy he doesn't think it will cause a problem.

Obviously I have to keep an eye on her and take her back right away if her behaviour changes or she seems unwell, she is to go back for another check-up after Christmas.

Has anyone had any experience of this? I'm trying not to worry but in the short time I have had her I have become so close to her, I would be devastated if anything went wrong for her.

She had 4 weeks insurance through petplan from the sspca until 10th December and at that stage I have arranged conver through AXA - do you think I should stick with petplan? As she has been diagnosed before the AXA cover kicks in they might consider this to be pre-existing.

Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Re: Heart Murmur

My vet told me exactly the same thing about Heniu's heart while we had him checked. He was about 6-7 weeks old now.

He's 5 month now and OK. Vet said it's nothing to worry about and it's very common in your kittens.

Re: Heart Murmur

My husband's cat has always had a heart murmur and is about thirteen now, so it's not always too bad. He's never needed any treatment for it as yet, either, though it hasn't gone away. It doesn't seem to have affected him in any obvious way, he's a normal healthy old puss and is still pretty active for his age. I would definitely think it will be classed as a pre-existing condition from now on for insurance purposes.

Re: Heart Murmur

Aw thanks that's a relief! AXA confirmed it wouldnt be covered if she required treatment for it so I have stuck with Petplan who will cover it (higher cost with lower cover but it's the only thing for it!).

Cheers
xx

Re: Heart Murmur

My sister's cat had a heart murmur and it never caused him any problems - he lived for about 14 years, and died of unrelated illness. Don't worry, I am sure your cat will be fine x
