Re: my cat has bad kidneys, please help :(

I think it all depends on how early it is caught and each individual cat, why they developed the disease and how illness affects them. Cats are incredibly good at hiding symptoms, even to the people that live with them and love them.

Apparently by the time you start to see symptoms its something like a 1/3rd of the kidney function has gone. The trick is to try and slow down the rest of the degeneration, giving them a diet that doesn't stress their kidneys further. Fortekor seems to be issued as standard nowadays, but I am not sure it helps in every situation. I am sure I read its only helpful if proteins are found in the urine.

As I said Jazz lived symptom free for over 5 yrs with it. His CRF was diagnosed after I noticed whole bowls of water disappearing in a day. He was still eating and quite bright, but something in his eyes told me he wasn't right. If you haven't noticed any symptoms and its just been picked up by a routine blood test then it sounds as though it has been caught very early. Did he give you details of her results ? Next time you are in ask to see them and ask him to tell you how above normal they are. I think its a BUN and creatinine (sp?) levels that are key. Both have a "normal" range and anything that falls outside that range constitutes a potential issue. It might put your mind at rest if for instance you know that top normal level for one is say 12 and she is 14 or something. Your vet should really explain all that to you.

A water fountain to encourage her to drink more could be a good idea. Then its just a matter of finding a good diet that suits her. It feels like an immediate death sentance, but it isn't necessarily that. Jazz was 10 yrs old when he was diagnosed and he lived until he was 15 1/2.

Re: my cat has bad kidneys, please help :(

This site has loads of info on diet Tanya's Feline CRF Information Centre

As obligate carnivores cats need a high protein diet. From what I have read initially in the early stages its the phospherous levels in foods that are key, low protein in the later stages. There are phospherous binders that you can buy that help - renalzin is fairly new What is kidney disease I would do lots of research then go back to your vet armed with questions, and get them to help formulate a plan.

Re: my cat has bad kidneys, please help :(

we only took her to the vet because she was off her food a bit and being fussy and occassionaly sick
she hasnt been drinking more etc or acted ill at all
she has been just herself
they did a routine blood test and it showed up
was really shocked to hear this
he didnt say how far on it was he just said she should immediately start the diet
shall i persist with trying to make her eat it or is this unfair if she really hates it etc?
thanks for the help x

Re: my cat has bad kidneys, please help :(

it is difficult to find a balance between getting your cat to eat the new food and ensuring it actually eats. my cat hated his food so i would mix it with cooked fish or chicken. my vet also mentioned cottage cheese as it is low in protein. i also had pouches and tinned but tbh i think they must have tasted pretty foul!

Re: my cat has bad kidneys, please help :(

Hi there, my cat had crf,and sadly he was pts in sept this year at just 6 years old,he had only been diagnosed for around 10 days when he passed away, as far as i am aware crf in not curable in most cases, as normally by the time symptoms are present 75% of kidney function is lost. but there are special diets that can help. i bought royal canin renal diet sachets, and eukanuba renal diet ,i found that Perry liked them, you can buy a Tablet introducer giver for about 93p from vetuk.co.uk take a look on their website they sell all kinds of veterinary diets .i mixed cooked chicken with his food that tempted him. take a look at Tanya's crf information centre,it has clear easy to undrstand information on crf in cats,Tanya's Feline CRF Information Centre sorry i don't know how to post links.

I think you should stick to the renal diets as much as possible, and only add protein if you really have to, to encourage her to eat.
Its amazing how much scientific research goes into making up these diets.
Your vet might be able to give you some sample sizes of different brands and types of renal diet, so you could see if there any she prefers.

Yes, as chronic renal failue is mostly seen in elderly cats , it is unusual to see it in younger cats, if in doubt phone your vet,if you google royal canin renal feline you will find pages that tell you what is in the product and general product information or google feline crf diet, that's how i found it, your vet might stock it though.
