Disaster! ALL cats gone off raw ???

Well.....they ate all the "sample" pack from food4cats - then I placed an order which lasted about 3 weeks and they all ate it - then I really went for it and bought about 6 weeks worth (freezer is stuffed) - and they all turn their noses up at it! They will still eat the diced stuff but not any of the minced flavours (and that's what contains all the necessary bits n pieces, bones n stuff)

What am I going to do?

Any advice?

Re: Disaster! ALL cats gone off raw ???

Get some treats that they like (my cat loves the Thrive chicken treats) and pulverise them over the raw meat. Works every time for my cat.

I think what sometimes puts them off is that the raw meat isn't as smelly as normal cat food, so a bit of treats on top makes it smellier and more tempting. Hope it works for you

Have you feeding just the chunks but adding a little of the minced stuff at each meal and gradually upping the amount? Sort of like re-introducing it again. Also try heating some water in the kettle and mixing a little into the mince, it seems to release the aromas and gets them really interested in it.

Re: Disaster! ALL cats gone off raw ???

Thanks. I've got rabbit out for the morning and will try the hot water initially. Do all pet stores do the thrive treats?

I mixed tonights raw with a pouch of hi-life and they ate it (not ideal, I know - but they need to eat).

Weird how they are all not interested at the same time? Only my adult cat (who has had dried all his life) is still eating it?

ah well..... something else to worry about!

If all you are feeding them is raw, you DO know they need Tourine supplements. I don't know why they are not feeding, but Tourine is a nutrient they need, but can't produce naturally & isn't in raw food. Although I don't agree with supermarket pet food, Tourine IS added to that food.

Re: Disaster! ALL cats gone off raw ???

Hi Simba.

Not meaning to be rude but I think I am right in saying that taurine is found in red meat? Plus the mince from food4cats has everything in it so there is no need to supplement
Of course I may have my wires crossed here, but I am pretty sure that is right!

Actually - it is.

Taurine is added to commercial foods because they have a low meat content and the cooking process destroys taurine.

A varied raw diet will provide sufficient taurine. No need for supplements.

Re: Disaster! ALL cats gone off raw ???

Food 4 cats meat is COMPLETE and has taurine in it - please don't panic - it's fine. Taurine is found in raw meat, it is destroyed by the cooking process. If it wasn't in raw meat all feral cats would die.

Send it to me?

Mix it in with something they do like, even if that's tinned cat food with a dubious meat content.
