What do you feed your BSH on a daily basis?

Milo went to the vets last week, to have his yearly injection (Leukemia, Enteritis and something else)

They put him on the scales, and he was 5.1kg.

She then said he was overweight?!, and she'd ideally like to see him between 4.8 and 5kg.

Now, we buy Felix or Whiskas pouches (whatever is on offer), and he has 1 pouch a day (yes, one pouch a day)... which is half at 8am, and half at 6pm. Along with 20grams of of Go-Cat Complete biscuits, at each 'meal'

We regulary get him to dash after the lazer pen etc, and can't see how we could possibly either feed him less, or get him to exercise more...

What also slightly annoyed me, is when the vet was talking about food, she very blazee said 'if you feed him a pouch in the morning, a pouch at lunch, and a pouch at night, and some biscuits then thats about right, no more than that', and my Wife and I just looked at each other in astonishment, that she reckons we overfeed Milo, then says three pouches and biscuits is about right...

I'd just like to know what other people are feeding the cats, mainly british shorthairs due to they're build, and general laziness.

Thanks in advance

Re: What do you feed your BSH on a daily basis?

How old is Milo ? I have an ori neuter who weighs 5.5kg He is certainly not fat just HUGE. As a breed I would say bone structure wise they are finer boned that British (except for Harry he has dinner plate feet ) I think British appear bigger than they are because they have such plush fur.

If you do want to him to lose weight though, I would cut out as many carbs from his diet as you can. Dry food especially brands like Go Cat are mostly carb, very little protein. As obligate carnivores they need high quality protein and can not process high level of carbs. For his wet food, Felix and Whiskers are only 4% meat the rest is carb fillers. If you look for brands that are 50% + meat content then that again cuts down on carbs. You could try adding fresh food to his diet too. If you do make any diet changes though make sure they are gradual so you don't upset his digestive system.

Re: What do you feed your BSH on a daily basis?

Milo is 15 months old, he was born in August 2008

Thats great advice already, so its not necessarily how much food you give them, its the quality of the food etc.

Next time we go shopping, will be sure to see whats actually in there

Oh, and he has been neutered if that makes a difference?

Thanks alot!

Re: What do you feed your BSH on a daily basis?

Me again...

Just looked at what he's currently eating and its 'Whiskas Oh So Fishy'

Says "naturally rich in omega 3, with whole pieces of fish"

That said, ingrediants say:
4% fish & fish derivatives (including min. 4% tuna, min. 14% whole pieces of fish), meat and animal derivatives, minerals

Anaylsis (%):
Protein 9
Oil 6
Ash 2.5
Fibre 0.2
Moisture 82

What part in all that do we need to be looking at X over 50%+ ?

Re: What do you feed your BSH on a daily basis?

My vet didn't know my cat was a BSH the first time I took him and told me the same lol

They are noticably larger than moggies and do infact eat more! My boy has 3 sometimes 4 pouches a day plus biscuits down at all times.

It really annoys me that vets come up with that rubbish not knowing the breed! He gets fed feline fayre pouches and Applaws Dry sometimes Go-Cat.

He also weighed about 5 when he was the same age. He's now 7 and just over 2 years old.

Re: What do you feed your BSH on a daily basis?

Neuters do have a tendancy to put on weight more easily, especially just after being neutered and it does seem to take them a while to shift that.

Brands that have high meat % are HiLife, Natures Menu (P@H), Applaws/Encore - Sainsburys name for it, Tescos do a 50% pouch, not sure what it is called. Online source with a wide variety of choice is zooplus.co.uk They give all the ingredients and %s online to help you choose.

You need a British breeder/owner to confirm it really, but Milo doesn't sound overweight to me. Upping the meat % in his diet will benefit him generally though. I love the name Milo.

Re: What do you feed your BSH on a daily basis?

Aww thanks very much for all your experiences/ help/ advice!

OK - we've just placed our first order from zooplus for a ceiling cat tree earlier today - doh! Will place another order when these pouches run out.

Just put down half a tin of (real) Tuna down for him, stupid me even checked the ingrediants, and it just said "Tuna" lol

Kittykat - so will Filou eat all three/ four pouches? We're not sure what to do for the best really... apart from buying good quality food in future

We love the name Milo, we didn't actually name him, but used to remind me of a dogs name in the film 'Mask' with Jim Carrey lol

there's only 0.7of lb between4.8kg&5.1kg does't seem much from being "normal"weight to overweight especially for a bsh

lol its a good name!

Filou eats 2 pouches in the morning more often than not because he will cry all morning otherwise! lol He would eat a hell of alot more if I let him! lol

He does eat alot more than my moggies, thats why I leave the biscuits out inbetween as he would cost me a fortune to feed wet all the time. He does eat them after hours of crying for more wet!

He is on good quality food now but used to be on felix/whiskas etc and can honestly say it makes no difference to how much and how often he wants to be fed.

He could just be greedy tho lol

If you want your cat to loose weight try feeding Applaws dry it contains 80% meat and almost no carbs. You can even get a sample FOC by calling them on 0800 083 0599
