7month kitten has been hospitalised!!

Hi everyone,

I have taken Tosca to the vet again tonight. He has been on antibiotics since last Thursday because of conjunctivitus.. I got home tonight and he smelt really bad. He has white dribble above his mouth and he does not seem his normal self. He is sleeping a lot and does not want to be touched. Anyway the vet checked him over and he has got ulcers in his mouth. The vet said he has been salivatating because of this. He reckons there is a chance that he has got calici virus.. He has been hospitalised and is going to be sedated tomorrow so they can examine him further and take swabs to test him for Calice and herpes virus and check his kidneys. He is being sedated because he is a very big, strong cat. I have been to the vets so many times since I got him from the breeder. It has cost me a fortune but I dont care because I just want to see him healthy and happy!

Thanks to you both. I will keep you updated. The vet is going to ring me tomorrow and let me know what is going on. Sammy (my other kitty) is missing him already!

Thanks again!

Hi ya,

When I got him he was 5 months old and the breeder gave me his vaccination card. It says that he has had cat flu and entiritis injection. He has had Leaukaemia jab as well which I had done. Surely this should have prevented his cat flu which he had contracted when I got him and prevented these illnesses he is getting now.. I am pretty upset and am waiting for a call from the vet.. I dont think that they will let him go until tomorrow but we will see. My other kitty has started sneezing now as well. I hope he has not caught anything. i will have to take him to the vet when I pick Tosca up.

Jo xx

Re: 7month kitten has been hospitalised!!

Sorry to hear about Tosca. Unfortunately the flu vaccines are not very effective and many cats still get flu despite being vaccinated - kittens are more at risk because their immune system isn't well developed. The flu viruses are very common and very infectious - just like colds and flu in humans.

Tosca should make a good recovery and hopefully won't have any further problems.
