Incontinence In 3.5 year old male cat?

Morning all,

I have a gorgeous Male cat who suffers with idiopathic cystitis, he was diagnosed with this a few months back. Our vet took urine samples which came back clear of stones and crystals so he was treated with cystaid. He has had a few flare ups since being diagnosed but has responded well to the cystaid each time.
However the last couple of days I have noticed small amounts of urine around the house, particularly in the area's where he sleeps. He is absolutely fine within himself and is playing, eating and drinking normally. I will be ringing and making an appointment with my vet for as soon as possible, but was wondering if anybody here has experienced similar thing with their own cats? Is he too young to suffer with incontinence? And if it is incontinence does anybody know how treatable it is? Sorry for the bombardment of questions, thanks in advance for your replies.

Sorry to hear your beautiful babe is not well. Could the Idiopathic cystitis have returned?
The only thing to do is get him or her to the vet asap.
I had a young cat once that had cystitis. She had some treatment but then a few weeks later she got it again. She had further treatment and after that she was ok.
You could put down a litter tray and see how often she is using it.
Sorry i don't have any answers for you.
Hope that your vet will come up with the right remedy!

Re: Incontinence In 3.5 year old male cat?

Hi Erin sorry to read about your poor boy we have an 11 yr old boy, Scutter who has been on cystaid for, blimey ages he also has to have a special food from the vets Urinary S/O by Royal Canin its not cheap but it stops him haveing blockages which is even less cheap & very painful for him. Maybe your boy could benefit from a diet change.

Im no expert on this but perhaps when the pee sample was done he had passed any crystals/stones & thats why there wasnt anything to see, I do know Scutter started the same way, little wet patches, but we had no idea why at the time untill 3am one Sunday when he woke us up, crying in pain as he couldnt pee & we had to rush him off to the vets for an emergency op - I dont know why it happens either he was about 6 yrs old & very active just one of those things - good luck & I hope its nothing to bad x

Re: Incontinence In 3.5 year old male cat?

Cats with idiopathic/interstitial cystitis often can get recurrences. However, any time a male cat is having urinary issues I consider it worthy of an emergency visit. Just because he had no crystals last time doesn't mean there aren't any there now.

If a cat has a urinary tract blockage or partial blockage it is extremely serious!

Hope he does ok!

Dr. Marie.
